An interesting discussion popped up off subject a few threads back regarding variable rates for different cities. The crux of opinion being that, this being a capitalist nation, one charges what the market will bear. While New York or San Francisco may respect one price, Bowlegs Oklahoma demands an adjustment if a lady’s inclined to tour there.
I know that bringing up this issue opens a sensitive subject for some, but I’d suggest that there’s reason for a gal to consider pricing differently for locals. For one thing, Las Vegas is not much better off than Bowlegs, Okla., and not looking upward anytime soon. Yes – There’s a lot of money flowing on the Strip, but it isn’t our money: That tourist money is coming from out of town, and going right back out in the form of corporate profits. Nevada doesn’t pay a lifestyle premium like the Bay Area, Chicago or New York.
Face it, folks: The local’s market is viable, but not with a tourist trade model. As a local, I can see any show in town at about half price, walk into most any strip club with a smile and a wave of my ID, or buy monorail tickets for a fraction of the published rates. Is it because locals are such great people, and Las Vegas wants to give us a break? Hell no. It’s because these businesses know that they won’t get my business if they try to charge me gouge-the-tourist rates, and a little profit is better than none.
I submit that there’s a heck of a market for the gals willing to recognize the two economic worlds in Las Vegas. Some already do offer locals rates, and I don’t see it hurting their business – more like the opposite.
Ladies, if you live here, you’ve already got the advantage of a low cost of living in S. Nevada (and many of you offer locals rates, too, for which I thank you). If you’re just visiting Vegas, and touring, then you got here via some of the lowest airfare rates in the nation thanks to tourism subsidies, incredible dining at fast food prices, and your 4 star Strip hotel cost less than a night in the Bakersfield Doubletree. So why am I paying $100 more for an hour with you than the guy who lives in Tulsa and probably makes the same pitiful income I do?
I’m not in Vegas for the week to blow a year’s worth of savings and half my kid’s college fund. I live here – and my employer pays me less than it does its Home Office smurfs, because I live in Las Vegas, and so they can.
Come-on baby. Check my ID and give me a break. I’m dyin’ here…
Lusted and busted,
