I'm in this business not for $$ but because it's what I enjoy doing. If it was about money I would have kept my job as a teacher with benefits and a full summer off.
I don't tour, I usually don't play outside of DC and NYC but I LOVE hiking and Red Rock Canyon has been on my to-do list forever.
Since this is what I like to do for fun (I don't drink or gamble) I thought I would have the opportunity to make new friends through TER to occupy my evenings when I'm not trekking around the dessert.

In re to the working cards, most cash handling, food & casino jobs in vegas require workers cards. There are three.. Depending on what you're doing ..

however there is business here with the right kind of planning.I know some ladies plan their tours here and do very well and keep returning.Then there are others that don't plan and just come to vegas and throw up and ad once here.While,that can be good if you are here for other reasons if your primary reason is to work than not so much.

It's true that the city is full of opportunity but it's also full of competition to negate some of that opportunity. I think Vegas is probably better than LA for hobbying (for the girl), but it's surely, from what I hear, not DC in terms of opportunity and chance of success. Vegas is very very saturated. Also, I've observed that LV, NV is much more socially conservative than most outsiders/tourists realize. This conservatism can contribute to problems for a woman hobbying there...But it is a great place to vacation for many, though I've never personally liked the flashiness of it.

Guys seem to plan a long time in advance when they have a trip planned for business or a conference to attend, or a poker tournament, or family trip…

So I have found I am sometimes booked months in advance. I don't really do short notice dates, or very rarely…

Also, in my experience people lurk on the boards where they are planning on visiting so if you are planning a trip here maybe it would be good to get active on the Vegas TER board a few months before and start placing a weekly ad here a few months before your trip. That would show that you have Vegas on your tour/visiting plans.  

And ask your regulars if they ever go to Vegas and see if you can at least set up one longer date for when you come out, to cover your expenses and make it worthwhile.

It took a bit to get used to when I moved here from LA but to be honest I really like the advance planning and the longer dates that I get here.  

I really enjoy the quality of the hobbyists I have met here in Vegas and now have regulars who travel here the same time every year and enjoy meeting up each time, or know they can ask me what to do here that is fun, or different to the norm, and that I can also invite other fabulous providers to join in.
