The Decline of the American Brothel

As a former brothel owner (been a co-owner of 3, managed another 1 also) I will weigh in:
It's business as usual in Australiam-  no negative impact from internet- but the big differences I see are how the brothels are run in Nevada.
Given that rules change county to county there are many different restrictions placed on ladies who work out of these brothels.
Some of the various rules which I have found when I investigated:
Ladies Have to live-in for a specified periosd of time (although the average seems to be around 3 weeks)
Ladies not allowed a private vehicle and must taxi/ be chauffered in and out of workplace at beginning and end of their stay
Must be oncall 24/7
Some countys allow ladies to leave premises during daylight hours but forbidden to leave after sundown
A number of ladies have informed me that they were not permitted to use their phones or to have any TV, they only entertainment they had during downtime was books.

Take these things into consideration and then ask yourself: what kind of woman would want to put herself into that kind of situation? It's nothing more than a form of legalized slavery! I'm sure there are borthels which have better conditions but asfor the smaller establishments, its like a prison... given that the majority of sex workers are single mothers (theres statistics to prove that) .. I feel that it would have to be a woman who is really down on her luck that would travel to the small towns, leaving their families behind for 3 or more weeks to work these establishments.

Compared to Australia where we are independent contractors we work whatever shifts we want noone can force us to work any shifts, we have full entertainment, cable tv, gyms, tanning beds, sometimes inhouse wardrobe and hair/makeup, meals provided, full kitchens (not to mention the plethroa of outside services suches as financial advisors/counsellors/healthcare etc ).   Its easy to get a lot of classy ladies to work these establishments - hell in some cities they are fighting for shifts there are so many ladies.

This is simple marketing 101: why do bars and nightclubs have ladies nights? Because if you bring in ladies the men will follow.
If the brothels lifted their game they'd have a better stable.

The interent and porn are NOT killing the industry.
There will always be a basic human desire to be skin on skin.... if anything porn just helps to fuel that desire.
And with online directories and review sites so easily accessible, it makes finding a lady tailored to your needs so much easier!  You know what you are getting before you hand over any money - so there's a lot less risk in that regard.

America needs to lift its game... I've written about legalization and decriminalization of sex work many times before... but seeing how it is still very conservative here I don't see that happening at any time in the near future

I Totally agree with you making prostitution illegal has newer done anything good for anyone. There will still be people supplying it as there will be people buying it. So what the ban does is forcing girls and clients into the more seedy part of the business where there are more risk for both parties. Here in Denmark prostitution is legal both to buy and sell but running a brothel is not ( there are still plenty smaller brothels). I would be much in favor of lifting that ban as long as there would be additional services for the benefit of the girls and men. I'm talking about security, regular screening for STD's, possibility for counseling etc.

But unfortunately the talks these years are more towards banning it altogether leaving yet another law for the police to enforce instead of doing something about real crimes that matters to most people. Sort of the same way i fell about Cannabis i don't use it and don't approve of it, but the police are spending way to many resources on fighting it and still if i wanted some now i could properly find someone to sell me some very quickly.

I appreciate your information, Kitty.  For many years, I wanted to visit one of the famous brothels in Nevada.  I am glad I never did and discovered here (TER) instead.  I have only been with one woman here, a very beautiful, fun to be with, and caring one for an old guy like me.

As far as legalization and/or decriminalization are concerned, I believe this absolutely should happen.  However, I would suggest you all tread lightly about having the government involved in regulating it.  I have worked for the government from military service on.  In my career afterward, I saw how bureaucrats made my profession one very difficult to work in, except for themselves.  There is an article somewhere about the tyranny of the bureaucracy.  I am not a liberal or a libertarian.  I support what you do.  I would have to be bats..t crazy to not do so.

I wish you & yours the very best.

It's unfortunate that the NV brothels are the only source of legalized prostitution in the USA.  I got my start in the hobby many years ago when I started visiting the brothels in the Pahrump and Reno/Carson City areas.  I still have friends who will only visit the brothels, since they are legal and the routine STD/HIV testing that the brothel ladies undergo gives them a sense of safety.  No matter what I say, very few of them will even attempt to give the indie/escorts a try.

Anyways, I think the brothels are really hurting themselves with the way that most of them are being run, as Kitty pointed out.  It's an antiquated system that hasn't changed, since the days of Joe Conforte.  Although as long as those rural counties need the brothels as a source of revenue, they will still exist.  If other sources of revenue were available to those counties, I'm sure the NV brothels will go the way of the dinosaurs very quickly.

In a way, I hope that doesn't happen, since if we lose the only form of legalized prostitution, I'm sure it will make any attempt at legalization in the future even more difficult.

your experience regarding brothels.
Not that I would ever work in one but I have always been curious about how they work.
Very interesting the info you shared.

I dated a woman several years ago who worked several  stints at a couple of brothels in Northern Nevada. Part of the process of course is that they are tested like lab rats and all services must be covered. The brothels I am sure are worried that if the women are free to come and go as they please they are likely to be bare backing their husband, BF or working in an "unsafe" manner while off premises.

I can't imagine working in a place like that, but my ex gf told me the money was good and she actually liked the competition and as a Korean she didn't mind the long hours. It was easy for her to simply immerse herself in work for the few weeks she was there, and just think about all the money she was making to secure her future.

and yes, some hookers do think about the future and don't blow all their money on Gucci and Jimmy Choos. lol My ex did quite well for herself over a rather short career of about three years, put away enough money to start a business and at last word was doing quite well for herself.

GaGambler is right. Some brothel don't allow their working ladies to leave the premises for the reasons he stated.  I've heard those same stories from several working girls and even from a couple of brothel staff workers.

I believe Nye County in southern NV is where the term "pussy prison" started, since their county laws are more restrictive than those in northern NV.  The Nye County brothels only allow their brothel ladies to leave for short periods of time during their tour and they have to be chaperoned by a staff member when leaving the premises.  Outdates are also illegal in Nye County, so the clients and ladies have to stay at the brothel.

The counties where the northern brothels are located are actually more lenient with their laws.  For example, outdates from northern brothels are legal, so clients can essentially leave the brothel with a brothel girl for extended periods of time, as long as they stay within the Nevada border.  You can even book an outdate with a lady at a northern NV brothel and then fly to Vegas if you wish. Some northern brothels also allow their local working ladies to go home after their shift.  I think there's a 24 hr limit, so if she returns any later than that, she's required to get retested before being allowed to work again.  Although, I heard that some brothels place "house rules" in their contracts which may restrict some workers from leaving after their shift, as well as not allowing some ladies to leave the premises unless accompanied by a staff member.

I've known a few brothel ladies who prefer working at the brothel, even under those restrictions because they don't want to deal with the logistics that are involved with being an indie escort or working for an agency.  On the other hand, I've known ladies who would never work in a brothel under those restrictions

From web sites that promote escorts, plain old regular adult sex web sites, and sugar daddy sites that it is hard for brothels to get people to come to their locations.  I guess the brothel is okay if you have a huge wallet, and you do not mind being worked over.
