I cannot get an opinion from any agency or entity on the condition of the Lady Luck Hotel/Casino in Downtown.  It has tremendous rates, but is this place a dive?  Is it safe for guests to walk around downtown during the day or after dark??  I will be happy to reciprocate any lodging or hobby questions you may have about Minneapolis.  Thanks, Snafu

My e-mail is [email protected] or just reply to the board, I will keep checking.  THanks a ton

sweetie, I wouldn't reccommend walking around downtown at night! I can give you some suggestions on good, safe places to lodge. You can email me personally [email protected]

I would rather stay in HENDERSON than in a downtown Vegas hotel / casino. Maybe its just me, but I've had some pretty unpleasant experiences downtown. I've stayed at the Excalibur, Hard Rock and Tropicana hotels for under $40 a day in the past. And the Tropicana included free ticket for the buffet too! Just one mans opinion.

and thank you zed and beautiful mocha princess for helping me out.  I found a different route and wala, the Excalibur all of the sudden had a good deal!

No problem snafu. I hope you enjoy your stay in Vegas; let me know if you need a few cups of mocha flavored coffee while there......... :-)
Just be sure you place your order in advance so that the coffee can be delivered on time......HOT & FRESH........

Your Mocha Princess,

Haven't been to Lady Luck, but there are some decent hotels downtown. Golden Nugget is nice, Fitgerald's is good too. There are some grungy places for sure--some of the older hotels.

I prefer the Downtown vibe and gambling to the over-the-top, mickey mouse vibe of The Strip. Everything is laid back Downtown and the people are real. It's Old Vegas.

Walking around downtown is very safe as any crowded, touristy area. Stay along Fremont street. Of course venture beyond and you might get in trouble. There's no reason for anyone to go outside Fremont.

You can always find better deals Downtown.

I had to say something here..dont go downtown..there are tons of other hotels with low rates..tons..I even say on my site that I will refrain from accepting apts at any downtown hotel..alot of others do the same..its not safe..and yes some of the Casinos are ok..but the accomadations are very gross in my opinion...dirty and they are Old Vegas..and they probably have the same sheets on the beds since they opened...

This is not intended as a flame. I used to think the same thing when I lived in Vegas, however...

I stayed 2 nights at the Golden Nugget last week and the hotel is comparable to any hotel on the strip. Also went down to neotopolis (sp) late night.

The police presence is just the same as the strip.

I also liked the convienience. All the casinos are well within walking distance.... (so was the courthouse) :-).

As for homeless, panhandlers, etc. etc. etc... There are far more "beggars" on the strip than downtown AND there are none of those annoying people handing out those adult flyers.

Moreover, the downtown properties are far more generous with comps than the strip.

Now if you decide to head east on Fremont St., that's a different story :-).

Otherwise, downtown is a viable option.

I would choose to stay at a down town hotel over the strip any day. The Golden Nugget is my atf. Everything is convenient, it takes less than 15 seconds to move from one casino to the next, there are bike patrol security guards all over, lots of stuff to look at, shopping, great food, friendly hotel employees, and it's a people watchers paradise. I would not wander too far east on Fremont, though.  Metro jacks people  up for no reason all the time. I had to reply to this post because I like down town so much I decided to call it home sweet home for the last 7 or so years.

I vote downtown over the strip for all the reasons above. One of the nice thing about downtown is that it is not geared up for families with babies in tow. I continue to stay at the GN each trip.
