" A coalition of sex workers, social scientists, professional sex educators, health professionals and their supporting networks announce a conference Las Vegas, Nevada, in the summer of 2006. You can join the conference organizing group and participate in the process by emailing Stacey Swimme.

This conference will bring together sex workers and sex worker advocates and allies interested in working toward decriminalization of prostitution in the U.S., to provide training/networking resources for advocates, to create spaces for dialogue among workers and between workers, supporters, academics and policy makers, to identify workers' most pressing needs and to collaborate on strategies for social and political change on local, state, and national levels. The focus is to develop strategies and skills for ending the criminalization of sex work and sex workers. The goal is to empower sex workers and their advocates/allies with the knowledge, strength, confidence, and capacity to put these practices into action."

Anyone attending this? Or want to offer commentary?

Please try not to fluff this one, folks...

I will be there as well with some other local girlfriends! I have heard there will be ladies from all over the US and even from other countries (don't get too excited boys, they might not be "working" while here). I belive registration is closed but I encourage other providers interested to contact them and see if you can still register!

Umm, you think this might have gotten embellished a bit by Metro, cops being what cops are, and the story being laid out in Tinkers to Evers to Chance fashion so even a 3 year old can figure out what's going on? I mean, they waited for him to finish before popping him, now that's hospitality. I mean, where's the LC violation here?

I note this:

http://www.swop-usa.org/about.php

"Operating in one of the most prominently violent societies today, sex workers in America experience this phenomenon pointedly in the context of their criminal status. Yet, sex workers are seldom afforded protection or recourse from violent acts committed against them because of the precarious, often graft-ridden relationship between sex work and law enforcement. Society tolerates violence against sex workers because of the stigma and myths that surround prostitution. Only until these falsehoods are corrected and sex workers are legitimized will we be able to effectively prevent and minimize the structural and occupational challenges of sex work.

Serial killers like Gary Leon Ridgeway, the Green River Killer who preyed on prostitutes, managed to evade law enforcement for over 2 decades. Meanwhile women, like Robyn Few and Shannon Williams, who as adults had consensual sex for money, are routinely targeted for elaborate high budget police stings. This gross misappropriation of public resources systematically entraps sex work to be a profession that is unsafe and stigmatized. The system, effectively, is institutional violence against the people who exchange money for sex."

Huh. Food for thought.
