BigPoppaPumplv & Others,

Check out the link for the fed's map of large fires, Alaska is burning up some acreage.

Keep it safe up there.

Since Sunday we have been living in smoke.  There are all sorts of forest fires in the areas outside of town.  It's so bad that when I  went to work today they were working on a plan to evacuate the kids to the jail in Anchorage!  There was even a rumor that they were going to evacuate the town!!  This is the worst I've ever seen it.

Thanks for the heads up.

I searched the Net - couldn't find any news accounts. I was going to sneak up and check on my real estate up there late tonight but I'll wait until next weekend if it's going to suck up there.

Best of luck to you and your community...you are in my prayers.

"A pall of smoke the size of Texas continues to blanket most of Alaska, as several dozen wildfires continue to burn out of control ....More than a million acres have burned in the state. There are currently 61 active fires in the state, mostly in the eastern interior, and in an area starting roughly 20 miles north and east of the city of Fairbanks. Of the 61 fires, 51 are uncontained, according to the NOAA National Weather Service"

But it seems there indeed has been a wind shift and slightly cooler temps today which is at least some help.

It's not only the whole valley, but it's most of the interior and the western part of the state.  A couple of the kids who are from remote villages told me that when they talked to family they said it was smokey there as well.

direction will help th effort.  I know what you're going thru as I'm also in a drought area and we've had several fires this season, unfortunately mostly started by frickin' morons!  I hadn't known you were up in Alaska, bro.

On the lighter side, perhaps you  may need to evacuate to someplace safe...like Vegas! :)

Be careful and best of luck.

Hi BPLV,

Sorry to hear you got fire problems going on up there and hope you are spared any misfortune.

My folks had to evacuate from NE Arizona last year due to the wild fires up there and hope you do not have to go through that yourself. It was not a fun deal for them.

Glen

Sorry about your folks.  As it stands now there should be no evacuation of the city.  It's still up in the air if we are going to send the kids at the facility to Anchorage, but I don't think that will happen.  We are supposed to get rain tonight and on Sunday, but as of now we are still covered in smoke.

All next week, Come and join me if it get too bad there... LOL

Big Poppa, might be a good reason to take a vacation to Las Vegas.  Won't be able to do a whole lot, if it turns any worse.  At least in Vegas you could be putting out other fires....

Thanks for the link.  Since Sunday we have had normal weather, with no smoke!!!  But four of the fires shown on the map are pretty much right on top of where I live.  The papers are saying we could be covered in smoke again at any time.  I'll have to make the best of the sunshine.  Oh I do that anyway in the summer.

I heard recently about the wildfires in Arizona that were threatening an observatory, but I hadn't heard about Alaska's problems.I did a google on Fairbanls, and they had a webcam and related article on the fires there.I always pictured AK as being green with pinetrees, but if it's DRY all that dense vegetation can catch fire!    I don't think you have that problem in Las Vegas,do you?I've driven from LV to Beatty and to Laughlin;it looks like nothing CAN catch fire, there's nothing but rocks! (and casinos and brothels) !
