my concern is that the man did not stop at sears to purchase the latest craftsman multi purpose  chop miter saw with the laser guide and the 10" blade. also, if the woman spent only "only" $876 in a mall, then there must have been some great sales going on that day.

The shopping gene is dominant in the female of this species.  This gene drives the female to not only visit her initial shopping destination, but every establishment wherein to spend money within a 10,500 foot radius of the initial destination.  Hence the additional route traveled by the female in this example.

What is missing from this picture is the location of the Victoria’s Secret boutique as it relates to the GAP location.  This alternate location could have an effect upon the male’s route from shopping mall entrance to the location of the GAP store causing him at least one additional stop.  If only to loiter outside the store or stand with his face pressed up against the store window.  Much like a small child eyeing the yearly Christmas display through the toy store window.

Part of a larger series of "test" questions.....I have the others in an email....theere is Alegbra, Chemistry, Statistics and Electronics.....all very funny.  If someone tells me how to put the drawing into a response I will send them all.
