I think most ladies appreciate the thought, regardless of how much you spend on a gift. That said, just make sure you spend an amount that you are comfortable with. A gift card is a great idea (although it is very similar to cash and kind of impersonal). Gifts are a good way to let the provider know you are trying to go above and beyond for her. I always appreciate someone that is willing to offer such a kind gesture, regardless of what the gift is.
I like to give them a nice bottle of alcohol (champagnes, wine, vodka, or whatever they are into) as gifts. Hopefully they have a fun experience when they are with their friends.
If they don't drink then let me know. I will have a plan B for you.
Sometimes I will ask the girl if she would like to have a drink during our time together and if so, what drink does she prefer. I have been told I am a gentleman by more than one lady with that.
