Someone sent me a private email -- I got notification via email, but since I don't have a VIP membership I can't read it. Is there any way to tell someone I don't have private email?

Not aware of any other way.  I'm of the opinion that the "envelope" should not be shown unless someone currently has access.  Realizing it's used to determine whether or not someone is using an alias, there could be another indicator of that issue.

well if someone needs to reach me they can use my handle and add the rest that comcast needs.
