Number 6 & Steely Dan

I read Number 6's posts about "The Dan" with great interest---have written posts on Becker & Fagen on the L.A. & general discussion board. I'm a Steely Dan fanatic ( have seen them in concert 5 times-----even have Walter Becker's solo cd---lol ! ) In total agreement with 6 that Donald & Walter are musical geniuses.

Would think they are the fave group of providers & hobbyists because so much of their work is so overtly sexual---for example : their song "Here at the Western World" deals with a brothel; the song "I got the news" deals with DATY ( "spanish kissin' see it glisten"); & to top it off, the group is named after a dildo, fer Chrissakes ! ( See Wm. Burroughs  "Naked Lunch" ).

Once again, 6, thanks for an enjoyable post. To everyone else who posts here, have a happy & safe Memorial day !

My fav group of all time is The Eagles. Do you see the connected between Steely Dan and The Eagles? Both groups are still around after 30 years. That can't be overlooked! I just saw The Eagles in concert and had second row center (10 feet away from my idol Joe Walsh). In an interview with the Eagles this was said:

What's the link between Steely Dan and the Eagles? Well, in an issue of Rolling Stone last September, Glenn Frey, discussing the song Hotel California, admitted Steely Dan's influence on the Eagles at the time. He said, "We liked the way Steely Dan would say anything (in a song). Steely Dan referred to the Eagles in Everything You Did so we decided to send them a message back. That's why we used the words, 'They can stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast.' "

Am I the only one who see's the connection? Am I the only one who loves both bands?

My heart belongs to Joe Walsh..
Jess :-)

---in the Steely Dan song "Everything You did", Fagen warbled : " Turn up the Eagles, the Neighbors are listening"-------- I like the Eagles quite a bit myself----my personal favorite of their albums is "On the Border". Several of the band members have turned out impressive solo stuff : Don Henley's "I Can't Stand Still" is an excellent album, featuring such great songs as "Dirty Laundry" & "Johnny Can't Read". a Latter Henley song, "Sunset Grill", is one of the best singles I've ever heard. Tim Schmitt, the Eagle's bassist has worked on several Steely Dan albums.

Last but not least, Joe Walsh has some excellent solo work himself-----with The James Gang, prior to the Eagles, he did the great song "Rocky Mountain Way"; he also did a great solo album in
'78 called "But Seriously, Folks", which features the fine song "Life's Been good to me"

Jess, your heart belongs to Joe Walsh ?------Isn't that dude smashed all the time ?-----;)

Later, kiddo.

Yes, Joe is smashed all the time, but trust me being 10 feet away from him as he rocked out to Hotel California was the biggest turn on. I don't need Joe to speak, I just need him to play..lol.. :-) His solo work has some of the best guitar riffs I've ever heard.

So when are you taking me to a Steely Dan concert Pri?

Kisses,
Jess

Jess, you are definitely not alone in loving either band. The true genius of Becker/Fagen, the wonderful harmonys of the Eagles. Thank God I had the opportunity to see them both, way back when, and then again later on in my life. Now, throw in some Poco, some Dire Straits, and you have another dynamic duo.

ps: did they play "Rocky Mountain Way"? I love that song!!!

The last verse, from "Do It Again".
No black cards can make you money,
So you hide them,
When You're able.
In the land of milk and honey,
You must put them on the table.
They (SD) did one of my two all time favorite CD's.  Can't Buy A Thrill.  Their first.
Yes, Jess is perceptive and so beautiful, too.

They're playing a bunch of venues in August in SoCal and NV...Lake Tahoe (Harvey's) on 8/2, and I think Pala on 8/5 as well.

I was driving up from LA on Saturday and was trying find their boxed set (Citizen Steely Dan)at Virgin in Ontario Mills with no luck (had to settle for a bunch of great DJs-TCM, Chemical Brothers, Felix Da Housecat instead)

A group of us were originally going see TCM at Palms/Rain on Sat, until N9ne Group made me an offer for a table which I laughed at (but it paled in comparison for what they soaked my brother for at Blush, one bottle per person at $500 a copy-brother should have called me instead), and by the time I got to Vegas, the party was already rolling at TR's, so I figured I'll catch them another time.

I just appreciate genius, that's all, and did anyone who saw the Kid Charlemagne clip note Fagen changed a lyric or two?
