Or another case of getting 12 'dull crayons' (see OJ criminal trial) on the jury. Some people take the phrase 'reasonable doubt' way too literally and would only convict if there were video tape of the crime. And even then, at least for the OJ jury, they'd still claim it was doctored. And yes, a doper like Ted isn't going to get much sympathy. Many would look at him and say he wanted to die - this mangy stripper and her boyfriend just helped him do it.
As I did for his father, who was one of the true pioneers of Las Vegas. But otherwise, there are really no sympathetic characters here. More importantly, the "no sympathetic characters" is sort of par for the course in Vegas.
This was a difficult case to prosecute. His death was originally ruled an overdose thus the crime scene was not processed as throughly as a homicide case. This works in the defense's favor.
Also, as time goes on, witness memories can fade, versions of the story can change. The defense has more time to come up with "reasonable doubt" senarios. Plus, there is Ted's estate. With millions of dollars at stake, it seems that all who were related to Ted are trying to get ALL of that pie.
