This is done to prevent bots and web crawlers from picking up the phone numbers.  The same is done with email addresses to prevent spammers from collecting them.

I don't think they put that much thought into the reason they can't seem to use numbers in their phone numbers??

I do know that it makes it kinda difficult to search the number with the search tool here on TER.

Sorry folks, I have another take on it..."back in the day" backpage and Craigslist wouldn't permit phone numbers in ads, so they had software to detect series of 7-10 numbers and flag them for removal...use words or odd characters between and viola...you've beaten the system

It keeps your wife from finding the ad when she googles the unfamiliar phone number she found on your cell.

I don't know if that is always a lady's motivation for doing that, but I actually appreciate it when they do. It makes me worry less in case the hobby phone ever gets examined.
