I'm currently having MAJOR cell phone problems.  I wanted to keep my old number and take it to a new carrier after an incident I had. So, this whole entire process turns out to be a nightmare.  I had a client tonight, wasn't able to call, had no other phone to use, the service is ported over now, but I'm not able to make some calls, and others I can. ?????WTF? Anyhow, I know this board really isn't the place for personal business issues, but if he happens to read it, it's sort of my only way of reaching out right now and apologizing.  I feel terrible and don't want him to think that I'm the biggest jerk on the face of the earth. I'm the second biggest jerk!! lol.:(. So, Mr. J. if you do see this, I'm so very sorry.

It happened once with me, that I ran out of phone credit just before someone arrived and had no time to run out and buy any. So I called with Skype from my computer, he arrived safe and sound, and the meeting was great.
Go to the skype website, and download it to your computer, then buy credit, and call any phone from your computer. I'd only use Skype in case of an emergency, such as the one you had. A Skype number comes up 000 and a list of odd numbers, which can look suspicious to the person seeing the call coming, but as I said, its great for an emergency back-up.

... be sure to leave it truly disabled on your computer unless you are needing it.  It initiates processes that start when you turn on your computer that run continuously whether you are using Skype or not.

This presents two problems.  As it creates a peer-to-peer network (similar to what the original Napster did) that Skype can use to "hijack" some of your computer's internet bandwidth, even when you're not making calls.  It can also bog down your computer and make it run slower, although these days that is not such a big issue.

The second problem is that there are lots of computer-bad-boys-and-girls, especially in Europe, who are actively creating Trojan Horse programs and sending them to Skype users, and trying to find ways to hack into your computer using the Skype network.  I would hate to read here that you were the victim of an attack.

Best to totally disable Skype when not using it for those emergency calls!

I humbly offer my services in this area in case you think your computer has been compromised.  Spending time with you(r computer) would be lots of fun!  Even tough I'm based in Tucson making the trip would be worth it (I'm sure you could find someone local to help out, but hey, a gentleman is always gallant!)

There is a good Wiki article on Skype that gives more details for the techies among us.
