Citizen Kane (still the best movie ever made--I could watch it another couple hundred times easily)
Casablanca
Best Years of Our Lives
His Girl Friday
It's a Wonderful Life
(I know, probably all seem like sort of obvious "humdrum" choices. What can I say, I guess I'm bit of a fuddy-duddy…)
Maybe not quite "classic" (what is considered to be classic, anyway? Stuff from the 40s or earlier?): Practically anything that Kurosawa has ever done--especially the tremendously under-appreciated "Ikiru".
What's up, anyways? Is someone putting together a classic film festival in town? If so, sign me up, and find me a date!

12 O'Clock High (IMHO the Greatest War Movie Ever) The Searchers (Hollywood wrote this off as 'Just another Oater' when it came out, John Wayne and John Ford should both have received Oscars) Casablanca (of course) The Maltese Falcon The Blue Max The Battle of Britain The Grapes of Wrath The Godfather The Godfather Part II (Part III is just too wierd) Its A Wonderful Life A Christmas Carol (Alistair Sim) Arsenic and Old Lace (Cary Grant was the funniest sumbitch that ever lived in that flic) Zulu (Michael Caine's first leading part, the rest is history) The Guns of Navarone Lawrence of Arabia The Bridge on the River Kwai Where Eagles Dare Goine with the Wind (of course)
Counterpoint ref 'Citizen Caine' A marvelously produced, directed and acted film. Well ahead of its time, but no, not something I would pick out to watch repeatedly. But that's just me!
If classic means producing memorable lasting impact that stands the test of time via quoted dialogue, creating a genre or a catalyst for ushering in a new era:
Casablanca, Double Indemnity, Baby Face
The last (Baby Face) a pre-code 1933 was the last straw for the censors who gave us the Hollywood Code and the Legion of Decency. Recently I had the pleasure of viewing the original uncensored version during an overnight with an atf. The philosopher’s advice to a young prostitute (Barbara Stanwyck) that drove the censors crazy especially because in the film she neither was punished nor came to a bad end. (OMG, no hell-fire and damnation)
“A woman, young, beautiful like you, can get anything she wants in the world because you have power over men. But you must use men, not let them use you. You must be a master, not a slave. All life, no matter how we idealize it, is nothing more nor less than exploitation. That's what I'm telling you. Exploit yourself! Go to some big city where you will find opportunities! Use men! Be strong! Defiant! Use men to get the things you want!”
