Craigslist to crack down on prostitution ads

By PAT EATON-ROBB
Associated Press Writer

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Under the watchful eye of law enforcement in 40 states, Craigslist pledged Thursday to crack down on ads for prostitution on its Web sites.

As part of Craigslist's agreement with attorneys general around the country, anyone who posts an "erotic services" ad will be required to provide a working phone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card. The Web site will provide that information to law enforcement if subpoenaed.

Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's CEO, said the deal will allow legitimate escort services to continue advertising, while providing a strong disincentive to companies that are conducting illegal business.

"We don't view it as a penalty, we view it as raising the accountability," he said. "A legitimate business should have no problem with that. They should have no problem providing a phone number or credit card credentials."

Craigslist filed lawsuits this week against 14 software and Internet companies that help people who post erotic service ads to circumvent the Web site's defenses against inappropriate content and illegal activity.

Craigslist, which posts 30 million ads every month for everything from apartment rentals to jobs in hundreds of cities, will also begin using new search technology in an effort to help authorities find missing children and victims of human trafficking.

Police across the country have been arresting people for using Web sites like Craigslist to advertise the sexual services of women and children.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who brokered the agreement, said his office contacted Craigslist after receiving several complaints from users late in 2007 about photographs depicting nudity on the site. He said Craigslist cooperated fully and there was never a need to threaten legal action against the company.

"The dark side of the Internet must be stopped from eclipsing its immense potential for good," Blumenthal said.

He added: "I am fully convinced that Craigslist wants to stop this activity as much as we do."

Buckmaster said the agreement does not cover Craigslist's personal ads, where prostitutes have been found advertising for "dates." But he said the San Francisco-based company has been working with authorities on that issue and on cutting down on the sale of stolen merchandise on its sites.

"We are experimenting with telephone verification in those sections," he said. "We don't have any plans to use credit card verification in that section currently. But this partnership is going to be active in that area as well, anywhere where crime does or could occur."

The agreement was joined by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"The criminals engaged in the sexual trafficking of children no longer parade them on the streets of America's cities," said the center's chief executive, Ernie Allen. "Today, they market them via the Internet."

The states that signed the agreement are Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam also joined.

I read this on the New JErsey board and quickly popped over here to see if it had been posted here as well. I was going to post a link to it otherwise, since it does say that Nevada has agreed to participate in this. I think the credit card thing would really help get rid of a lot of the crap on there. Maybe it could go back to being what it used to be a few years back.

I think this makes CL even more unsafe.  Personally I'm not eager to give out my home address, which is listed on my credit card, nor am I eager for police to have access to that information.

I would say mothers with children living at home, should think twice before posting now.  All the information on your credit card is being saved, and all it takes is a piece of paper in order for them to get that.

I have never posted on CL and am glad I don't, especially now.  I feel sorry for people that rely on that site, as this will sadly decrease their business.

They have already started charging, and at 5 bucks a pop for an ad that can be pulled and/or flagged, seems like they are going to be making more money than most escort malls.  AMAZING!!!

Something else will come along to take CL's place soon enough.

Back Page. Although maybe a step up in class and style it is still a hit or miss proposition as compared to well reviewed TER companions.

And, BP has been charging since the very beginning and there too girls or whom ever is buying the ad are going to give up personal information via CC payments.

There have always been sites, at least as long as I have been in the hobby, that require personal information from advertising providers in an effort to weed out the BS. Some girls get scared and don't do it out of fear that they will get caught. First off.... if you're afraid of getting caught, maybe you shouldn't be doing this, or maybe there is something you're doing that you shouldn't be doing that would get you caught lol..... nevertheless, it's not anything new for the legit girls to be willing to expose their personal identity for the sake of legitimate business advertising. Albeit, uncomfortable to do this with CL because of the history and rep, I decided to bite the bullet myself and put one out.

There are several of us ladies here in Vegas who know we are easy to find. Should any one of us do something to seriously break the law or somehow endanger the safety of another, the authorities pretty much know where to find each of us lol. But we don't have issues because we aren't stepping out of line. (knock on wood lol)

I, for one, am glad to see CL taking these steps to eliminate the fake ads and BS that keeps getting posted. I would like to see them require a membership for flagging purposes, I think it would cut down some of the vengeful flagging that goes on and would hold those flagging another responsible for their record of flags. But that's in a near perfect world also lol.

informationex.com  I did a whois.  It looks like it's been up since 06 and the guy could care less who has all his information LOL.

Not sure if it's a pay site or not because I didn't and won't try to post.

I really feel bad for the ladies that relied so heavily on CL.  Good luck to all of you.

Will there be an increase of street activity now?

Just a crazy question that popped into my head this morning

The 'good' thing about CL in it's former incarnation was that any girl could post. (That was also the 'bad' thing about it.)

For girls with credit, a car in their name, an apartment and a FICO score, using a CC on CL doesn't pose an issue. They can make a choice. using a CC to post is no riskier than meeting a stranger based on a phone call, is it?

But those many girls without credit, those who are new to town, those using cashcards and pay-by-the minute phones while staying with a friend or at the Suites are gonna be completely shut out.

I'm gonna miss them! Well, some of them.
(oops - is my whiteknight showing again?)
