I figured no one, but no one, knows more about Las Vegas hotel operations then the ladies on this board!

I'm staying at what I will nicely call a mid-range strip hotel for CES. I imagine at least when I check in they'll be pretty close to capacity.

Other than karma points, which do count, is slipping the front desk clerk a $20 likely to actually get a better room or other upgrade or, generally, are their hands pretty tied

keep in mind this was some years ago so it might have changed.

Not sure if that trick will work being that it is CES time and I am sure the room rates are quite higher than normal.Might not have any rooms to upgrade or maybe more than $20 tip for the upgrade being that it is such a busy time here.
Good luck to you

Sometimes I'll get suite or a upgraded room for a major discount. My guess is that depending on the hotel, that tip might work, or you may have to up the ante on your higher end hotels....but try it, what can possibly go wrong other then they'll look at you like you have tens heads. It'll help if you have a players card.

I'd save my $$ this week, as the best time for the trick to work is when occupancy isn't close to full.
I've found that it works better (Bellagio) at some hotels than others (Wynn/Encore) in the past couple of years.  In general, everything is much stingier with comps in Vegas these days than ever before, and I've been a visitor since the '70's (gulp!).
Good luck!

My last stay there I tried the twenty dollar bill but all it got me was a higher floor. The lady at the desk when she saw it said lets see what rooms we have available but after ten minutes of her making calls to try to find an open suite that was all I got.In all fairness I did go during the Sema show so that stacked the odds against me with everything being booked. Now she didn't offer to return the twenty back but I would have gave it back to her anyways for her efforts.

No one will ever offer a tip back.  Lol not in vegas anyway...unless you count the .25 I tossed back at someone after I paid them 5k on roulette lol
***As a former hotel employee for over 8 years, I say keep your tip for the people who bust their ass for you....porters, bartenders, maintenance, housekeeping, cocktails, bellhop...these are people who help your stay as nice as it is..

After reading about the 20 dollar trick  many times, I finally decided to try it on my last trip to LV. It got me diddly squat. (Actually the worst room ever in Vegas). Not even an acknowledgement from the clerk.  Never again.

Twice at Caesars I've gotten a 900sqft corner room with a view of the Bellagio fountain and all I had paid for was the lowest room rate.

Planet Hollywood they gave me an nice room, high and a view of the strip. Wasn't sure what I should've gotten due to buying it with a convention package. But it wasn't strip view for sure.

Ballys got a big room and best of all, she said I should've gotten a lower rate for the weekend and chopped $100 off my bill.

Encore, he said he hooked me up but frankly it was what I paid for. I considered that one a bust. But the rest were wins IMO.

Before handing over ID or license I asked at the front desk if an upgrade was possible and they said flat out no, they were sold out. So didn't fork over the $20.

However, I did take another suggestion in this thread and leave the $20 for the cleaning crew. I figured it would make someone happy and besides, I could always use clean towels, karma and discretion as I may (or may not) have been  party (so to speak) to certain other tricks..
