Oh, those undocumented alias, wait till Trump becomes president…

Some folk suggested that THIS forum is unique, in that we need to see people’s Kgirl review credentials before we can trust or judge what they say.
So, how about  some discussions:
1. Why do people use alias? Pls do tell. You have plenty of covers with the TER 9 official reasons.
2. Why do people loath alias so much? Unless it’s personal attack behind a mask, does it matter?
3. If alias irks people so much, why not start a movement to ban such practice? Appeal to TER on the Suggestion forum.
4. Looking back at some previous popular threads started by alias, it seems like as long as it’s innocuous, neutral or positive, people don’t mind. See the following list with # of reads. Other forums would kill for such readership.

The best reason for an alias is so that unpopular ideas don't impact availability of providers (who otherwise might refuse to see you.)

Normally on a forum I wouldn't use an alias since there is no consequence. (In fact on other forums I use my real life name -- but obviously not here where there are legal consequences.)  But bad blood here has the potential to limit provider options.  So that's why I alias now almost exclusively

engaging in a civil conversation with a member using an alias.  However, as everyone knows, I think it's cowardly to attack someone personally from behind an alias.  If someone doesn't have the balls to say something rude from their real handle, then they should STFU.

Lately, I have also been irritated by alias' that post comments about their reviews or referring to reviews they have written.  Its an insulting waste of everyone's time.   We can't see the reviews when an alias is used, so what is the point?  I think it damages their credibility as far as whether I would bother to read their future posts.

My local area has had a recent bust. My username on the now-defunct local site is the same as my TER username. While my exposure was minimal (LE not likely to use IP and Google Voice number to find real identity of an ordinary member), the bust got me thinking about LE risk in general. Over the years I became more and more lax about security in favor of convenience. I'm currently revamping my OpSec (learning from people from a more risky "industry"), and after a few months I will likely return to my real username.

but I use alias as my main handle for 2 reasons:
a)  I'm kind of LE phobic, opting to leave minimal trails. I was also careless when I first started, in using same moniker for handle & two main emails. In fact, one time on a blog, some guy said a simple search would find my handle, emails etc. So, pardon this cowardly paranoid. Pls ignore me, mea culpa.
b) Previously a couple bookers asked for my handle. I gave them my alias, to avoid any potential conflicts of interests. Surprisingly, they accepted it.

You can ignore a user, but you can not ignore an alias.

As for using an alias, there are perfectly legitimate reasons for doing so, and then again "some" people use them to be "internet tough guys" so they can escape any consequences for things they are too cowardly to say from behind their "real" fake name.

NEVER give my TER handle to a provider or booker.  I have floated many ideas in my posts that would be unpopular with providers, so I don't want them to associate the guy that's seeing them with CDL from these boards.  I only use provider/booker refs when booking an appointment, but will never use my TER handle to get an easy appointment.  The other benefit is that I can write an honest review without worrying about criticism or blowback from a provider or booker.

cowardly indeed when they can't say it from their REAL FAKE NAME!  I've had many arguments here about various subjects, but still respect the guys who will debate without using an alias even though we may violently disagree on certain ideas.

But there are many with yellow envelope but no review list. I thought for many alias haters, they're irked that the guys dared not show their review list. So, should they also hate you guys with no reviews? To underscore this point, a guy used an alias NoYellowEnvelope.
Sure, I'll drink to any REAL FAKE name. :)

Yep, it's fairly easy to setup two or more free accounts on TER and then only do reviews under one you don't post to forums with if you wanted.  That would be a waste of my time and engery but I suspect that's why we see some of the posting and then talking about reviews.

unless the guy always remembers to go to the nearby Starbucks. Even then they are suspects, always from the same neighborhood.
Would anyone go thru such trouble to post? In that case why not just use an alias. It's getting more intriguing & convoluted.

https://www.torproject.org/

Your traffic is relayed through 3 nodes before reaching TER, so TER sees the last node's ("exit node") IP. And with two mouse clicks, you can establish a new "circuit" so TER sees a new IP.

That's just to show you how easy it is to visit TER with a new IP without moving your ass. I don't actually recommend using Tor for TER because there are many downsides: increased risk of getting account/password stolen, slower browsing, etc.

TER will never get rid of Aliases! Regardless, if you bitch.

...I had over 500 aliases at one time, most used only once as a punchline to a joke.  Now we can only have one alias and i don't think I've ever used it.

I've been here over a dozen years, I have tens of thousands of post, I was a TER moderator for several years AND hundreds of people on TER know my REAL name.

So do I have less credibility than some guys with a couple of dozen reviews to his name?

I too used to have at least a couple of hundred aliases, most of them like you only used once as humor. Since multiple aliases were prohibited, I don't even have an alias, much less post under one.

I see someone else already mention TOR and there are other annonymizer services you can subscribe to -- and probably should be if you are emailing providers to setup dates. But even without that you can use a computer and you smart phone (unless you have your smart phone set for WiFi and going through the same router/proxy).

Last, I'm not sure if that's something TER would routinely do or only investigate if someone complains or someone is just way over the top with what they are doing.

if you could use your real handle and your alias in the same thread.  I could have a flame war with myself that would shock the sensibilities of everyone here.  Lol

and through the use of "yellow envelopes" it still does.

Back when I moderated the P&R board (ghost moderated actually, as back then it was an "unmoderated" board) A certain poster posted with at least five different aliases, all with different viewpoints, all arguing against each other. Yes, I pulled the posts.

Yeah, the good old days. lol
