I am seeing a J-girl , who is actually from Taiwan , soon.  She doesn't speak much english. I thought a small gift might be nice to welcome her to town.  Any suggestions?
Nothing big like an appliance.  Perhaps something personal  she can use. A bottle of wine, don't even know if she drinks. Thought about some nice body oil, but that might seem like it was brought for my pleasure.
Suggestions welcome.

Then the presentation and wrapping matter almost as much as the gift, for a small token gift.  A small bottle of perfume or something along those lines, but wrapped beautifully and carefully -- to the Japanese, the attention to the detail in the presentation is as important as item.....

CR

What if she's from Taiwan, and not really from Japan?

And be sure that the wrapping is red which denotes good luck and passion, and never black (denotes evil), and especially not white (denotes death).
I read a book once aimed at American businessmen regarding proper etiquette when traveling abroad.
One gift to never consider to an Asian person is a timepiece.  It is a reminder of the shortness of life.  The author suggested a very nice pen as always being appropriate for all cultures.  Of course he was also the CEO of the Parker Pen Co.

Myself, I like to gift jewelry, and I've never met an Asian gal who didn't love jade.

lived in Tw for a while. A lot of that is true, but mostly the older generation mostly, and the rules doesn't always hold anyway. father-in-law wedding gift to new son-in-law is a nice watch for example, and he's not trying to say die soon.

TW girls like what every american girl would like. A little necklace or perfume, etc. Young tw girls are very western. And wrap it nice, every girl pays attention to that shit, not just japanese. most tw girls don't really drink, but def not always true - esp for a prostitute.

or is that too Western.  or wine? (she may not be 21),

They give chocolates in Japan too. They celebrate Valentine's day (2/14) and "White day" (3/14), so it wouldn't be "too Western" to give chocolates

And, typically, pretty/thin Asian girls don't eat or only eat limited chocolate/sweet to keep their figure.

She could speak very little English when I first met her though she was proficient at the universal language.
I booked her four times in one month .
I knew I wouldn't see her for awhile when she informed me she was going  to the wrong Coast . On my fifth trip I gave  her  English language DVD's produced in Thailand for a parting gift.
When I saw her again years later she remembered my name and acted like I was her long lost lover.
