Sound to me like you're trying to say too much. I suggest simplifying your conversation to the amount of English they can handle and throw out the translator. Some speak plenty and you can carry a full conversation, while with others who are newly here you might keep it to simple concepts and topics. They ALL speak the language we really want them to speak anyway, right?
