Visitor Question

I have an upcoming conference in Orlando and will be arriving a day early for a little hobby fun.  In terms of getting a hotel for that night, are there areas that I should avoid as too "family" oriented?  I want to be discreet.  The conference is actually in WDW so I was hoping to stay nearby the first night.  I would appreciate any insight into the area.  PM's would be appropriate for this.

Thanks,

TheAuditor

First off, if you are not going in the summer or during the regularly scheduled school holidays, you should only run into families from Europe (and maybe the occasional home schooled family). Some hotel suggestions that are likely to be less family oriented...

The Waldorf Astoria or the Hilton Bonnet Creek - Neither are official Disney properties and should have more business travelers. - I've had several 'friends' visit me here and as long as they are dressed appropriately (business casual), they look like fellow convention attendees.

Celebration Hotel - Located in Celebration (a great little town just south of the Disney Property) but not known for being overly kid friendly.

Mona Lisa - Another hotel in Celebration

Ritz Carlton Grande Lakes - Off Disney and pricey, so you'll only get annoying rich kids who are used to all levels of debauchery and corruption and will not be put off by your hobbying

Avoid the actual Disney properties and the hotels on Hotel Blvd (near downtown Disney as those are the most likely to be crawling with kids).  Also avoid anything like the Nickelodeon Hotel for obvious reasons.

Honestly, for convenience sake, you will want to stay where you convention is being held and if it is one of the larger properties (Dolphin, Swan, Contemporary, etc.) with a convention center, your date can easily blend in with the appropriate attire.  Reality, nearly every property in Orlando is a family property.  It's like going to Vegas and trying to find a hotel without a casino. They exist, but they are few and far between.

Another thought.  If she's any sort of actress, she should be able to blend in.  Worst case, fols around you will think you're with a colleague and are starting an office romance.

Relax and go with the flow.  The more you sweat what everyone around you thinks, the more obvious you will be.  most people are so self absorbed, that they wouldn't even recognize a hobbiest/provider situation if you paid them.

PM me if you want additional details on Orlando hotels

you gave might be quite good, that rundown might have been better and more safely conveyed via PM.

It's usually not a good idea to post specific hotel information on a public board....

I listed nine separate hotels...hardly specific.  Several of which are convention type hotels with in excess of 1500 rooms each.  If you and Barney have the time to kill, then knock yourselves out.

Thanks to everyone for the information (both above and PM's).  Greatly appreciated and another reason why TER is such a great resource.  Now time to search the reviews!!

a stretch for each of those individual hotels to (now) know they've been named on a public site as a place to undertake these "activities".

Is the chance high? Maybe not.

Do we want to INCREASE the chances here?  I think not.
