I'll be visiting S. Florida from DC area in a couple of weeks. I'm looking for a hotel in either Ft Lauderdale or Miami area, preferably on the beach. I would appreciate any recommendations from gents or ladies regarding friendly hotels not super expensive.

These are all located on the beach (the pelican), or right accross the street A1A.  As far as cost, they are the nicest, if you look around on-line Hotels.com, hotwire, priceline etc...I am sure you can find a great deal.  Probably less than $100 a night for a 4 star.  But be careful, they will all get you on the parking!  Lago Mar is nice too but generally much more expensive.  The Diplomate is really nice too but a bit too far south.

Good luck

Thanks for the recommendations, Elle, also for the warning about parking.

I presume these are all places that would be hassle free if a friend visited me there?

Not on the beach exactly, but on the bay with a salt water pool.
Very sexy upscale atmosphere without the snobbery, amazing water front dining, and an indoor coed bath house I can't even begin to describe in words. Also, the don't allow anyone under 16, which is in my opinion, a major plus!

And on any given day you can find me here sunbathing topless ;)

But for FtLaud do the Yankee Clipper. Its right there. There are also some spots by Galt Ocean Mile that are pretty cool. The ones right on the beach of course.

i'd choose Lago Mar, hands down.  the price differential is actually pretty negligible (looking at random september dates on hotels.com) for the quality of the resort.  i am admittedly a beach girl, so that figures strongly in my evaluation, but i do love good service, a fabulous bed and a first class spa, too!   IMHO nothing beats Lago Mar's expansive private beach, and everything about the resort is simply outstanding, although i prefer some of ft. lauderdale's better restaurants; Lago Mar's are fine for breakfast and lunch but there are better choices in the area for dinner.   i've never had a problem from the front desk when visiting, either...just a nice welcome.  $175

the only other property mentioned that is literally on the sand is the Pelican Grand, but their beach is significantly sub-par IMHO, nowhere near the quality of Lago Mar (probably because it's maintained by the city of ft lauderdale and not by the resort itself)  $149

the rest of those mentioned are nice, but are across the street from the public beach:
W ft. lauderdale beach (fabulous property, but i've had to be met outside and escorted in when visiting)  $179
Atlantic resort (a more exclusive resort on a par with lago mar)  $169
Westin ft. lauderdale beach - nice property, but nothing special   $144
Hilton ft. lauderdale beach - very nice hotel, but not so hobby friendly lately from what i've heard  $143

enjoy - and welcome to my playground!
