Very few people in the world wish to become "card carrying prostitutes". Otherwise you'd have way more women working at the brothels in NV. The stigma is still far too costly for women especially: think of how often sex workers would be discriminated against in custody battles, for trying to move on to another profession, for renting or leasing a home, etc... The list goes on. Perhaps another time, another planet.
A study was actually done in Australia comparing a "legal and regulated" (aka "card-carrying") province and a "decriminalized" province. They found that even though the legal and regulated area had far fewer sexually operated businesses (25 compared to 400) they had a higher rate of STIs among the population. Why? They discovered that when people aren't criminalized or punished in any way for being in the industry, they pretty much take very good care of themselves because they arent worried their doctors will turn them in. In places where you have to sign a piece of paper to do the work legally, far fewer will do so, but will work illegally. When the punishment for being caught working illegally is so great, people don't want to draw attention to themselves, so test less often.
Unfortunately it sounds like she broke the first rule of talking to LE, and that is to keep your mouth shut. It's a lot harder to mount a defense after you admit your guilt.
What happened to the country's "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" ? Two consenting adults in the privacy of their own? Did not bother anyone nor hurt anyone nor shoot anyone?
this country sees it as a easy way to make money.. after u pay all the fines n court costs they made 2-7k.. not to include they hope they catch a minor or 2 but rarely do..
Like Canada and most European countries, this should be legal and regulated. It is working in all those countries and see why not here. It is all those religious bigots standing in the way.
But it actually costs law enforcement (aka taxpayers) on average $2600 to make one arrest. That doesn't include everything subsequent to arrest. So I'd argue that it's more of a political stunt than a money grab. Unless, of course, they can throw RICO at someone and seize their assets.
It's also an easy gig: sex workers don't carry guns or pose danger, are usually scantily clad, and in some places the cops can partake of the offerings to their heart's content before making an arrest. Win win for them.
Or what happened to separation of church and state? I mean, the prostitution concerns people have are MORAL issues usually brought on through the teachings of religion.
So much for victimless crimes - better to punish the single moms and men in sexless marriages.
