Just got email from provider announcing her return visit here.  Sent mass email, now her entire client list has her entire client list.

That's not all......

Got this email from one of guys on list who received this email:

"Your name has been brought to our attention in conjunction with a prostitution investigation - the provider goes by the name ______ ____.  We would like to speak with you about your involvement with said provider.  We do NOT intent to make you any part of the focus of our investigation as long as you are truthful and cooperative in regards to our investigation.

Not smart but could also be a virus attack or LE spoof.

First, I hope people in this hobby don't use business or regular personal email accounts.  Second, if the first thing is true there is nothing linking a person to an email.

Life goes on....back to watching Catalina clean!

Omg... another My Name is Earl fan? We're def a dying breed lol
and fyi, Catalina is way hotter than Joy.

I hope you are right!!  I certainly use a private email....but I looked thru the list of about 30 email addresses, and at least 10 were work emails!!  I mean, like bill@greenleafshoes.  I know these businesses!!  While it certainly shocked me, I can only imagine how those guys are feeling.

Also....while the intent of the provider was to drum up business, I wonder how many new "former clients" she has now.  At least one!!!!

I hope you didn't give her your personal information like first and last name.  I've heard of at least one provider that stored that information and then sent out the mass email like you just saw.  The emails would then display as

"John Smith" [email protected]

Another reason to never ever ever give out too much personal information.  We all know that it is NEVER destroyed.

Your email can be traced by the IP address that you sent the email from. The email account you send it from will still show the IP that you used to access the email account. Unless you can spoof your IP, they can see where it was sent from.

How do you think TER is able to identify self reviews? They trace the IP it was sent from.

An IP address will only give a general idea of location. Basically the city it originates from, and that's not even completely correct. Don't perpetuate the idea that an IP address will lead the average person directly to your doorstep. Doesn't happen.

TER identifies self reviews or logins from another computer by MAC address, not IP. The MAC is unique to a particular machine.

I could be wrong I suppose, but my understanding is that MAC addresses are limited to the local area network and as such are not passed on to the internet, so all they get is IP address, no MAC address.

There seems to be many though that just do not understand proper procedures of this technology which is now not new any longer.  Just the other day I had a hotel send out a special showing everyone in their address book in the “to” field.  Not only did they send out their whole client list but then there were MANY that hit reply all and said something for 300+ people to see.  What a waste of bandwidth!

One just has to wonder how some get through the day!

I got it as well and one email looked familiar, so I googled it and I could immediately find a picture of the guy along with his wife and child's name.

I used to think that first name and last name was fine to give out, but in cases like this it really shows me that maybe it's not ok, especially for those of us with very unique names.  Luckily in this email it didn't list all of our names.

The absolute weirdest part though was she told us the day and time her flight was coming in, when she was flying out, and then the actual address of the hotel she was staying at.  I'm sure the flight times were approximate, but she gave the complete address.  And this wasn't an email to friends either, I had contacted her a while back and just stayed on the mailing list.

Although I did notice her site was recently taken down.  She'll probably be taking a bit of a vacation.

Too bad! Talk about having a marketing plan backfire!

But, it would take alot of nerve to go there now!!!!

I haven't been around long enough to see her other names she had, but is this why she's changed the past ones?

I think we need an email rules or best practices post.
Rule # 1 for hobbyists- Never use a personal email address.
Rule # 1 for everyone- Always use the BCC feature if you are going to do a mass email.  No one can see each other's info.

Rock on Whereaminow...  rule number 1... duh...I cannot imagine anyone not using a separate email address for hobbying!
