According to cbriggs77, of Atlanta, who is aspd's "CTO" (Chief Technical Officer) 2 of their servers were hacked. All of their current backups of the current database were destroyed. The hacker set off a "logic bomb" that destroyed their main server. They are running an old database while a hired consultant attempts to recover the destroyed database.
"What is a Logic Bomb? One of the oldest forms of malicious programming is the creation of dormant code that is later activated or triggered by specific circumstances. Typical triggers are events such as a particular date or a certain number of system starts. Stories abound of disgruntled programmers planting logic bombs to get back at employers deemed to have been unfair. Several logic bombs have been planted in order to extort money ("pay up or the computer gets it''). This requires paying up or finding the malicious code and removing it. The latter option can be extremely costly when the system is a large mainframe computer."
Top-line sites should have all of the fail-safe's. It appears that aspd did not. As an aspd poster wrote, having a professional and secure site is "all about network architecture and planning, redundant data, etc."
Prior to the attack, some had posted about how slow the site was functioning.
Some issues: 1. Did the hack obtain passwords? 2. Obtain credit card information? 3. Gain access to personal information by infiltrating aspd's private messaging system.
4. Will LE become involved in an investigation to determine who hacked aspd, and will LE then gain access to members' information?
