Most STIs aren't visible unless the person is in the midst of an outbreak. For things like HSV and HPV, someone could have those STIs and you'd never know unless they were in the middle of an outbreak.
The only advice IS the obvious advice. Play safe. If you're concerned about something you see on a provider, then ask her about it. It could be as simple as an ingrown hair. I've done the same to clients. If you're observant and know what to look for though, a lot of embarrassment can be mitigated on the part of both parties.
