Hi Fellow Hobbyists,

It's a day we can & should never forget!!! I was listening to the radio, ready to leave for a college class, when the tragic news came on!! I turned on the TV & saw the horror!! I left for class & saw some more footage @ college!! Ten minutes into class, the campus was closed!! Gridlock happened In the parking lot as we drove to the exit!! It took me a 1/2 hour to leave!!

I stopped @ the grocery store!! There was a long line @ LifeSource ( blood bank) It brought a lump to my throat!! I arrived home & had my eyes affixed to the Tv for the next few days!!!

One of those fighter jets went over my complex to intercept a plane!! The sonic boom made my window bulge out!! The window, thankfully, did not break!! It was so surreal!!

When the baseball & football season's started playing ,It was great to see Liza Minnelli sing New York, New York, @ Yankee stadium!! Pat Tillman ran out of the football tunnel In AZ w/ a huge American flag!! The healing had begun!!!

My brother, a welder, was part of the crew that built the Pentagon memorial!!

I would like to hear your story!!!

Hi,

It was my freshman year of college and I was in my first class of the day. Everyone from NYC began to panic. I was totally confused as to what was going on. Then someone told me that a plane just hit the World Trade Center. I didn't even know what the WTC was. I had no clue what people were talking about! Then men and women started crying. I just remember being incredibly scared as I didn't know what was going on. My fear was intensified by the fact that I didn't even ow what I was afraid of!

I don't think I was ever scared like that before or since. Well, maybe during Officer's Basic MOUT training when I played an insurgent? That's another story for another time.

Good post. I'm glad you posted it!

Kisses,
Katie

Had the radio turned down low because I was calling a friend whose birthday was 9/11 to wish them HBD. I hear the report in the background and I instantly thought..."Is this the anniversary of the WTC bombing?"  But I recalled it being colder weather. Went into work and everyone was glued to NBC.  Couldn't believe it.  Tried to use the internet and you simply clocked. Was told to go home by 11am and working near O'Hare I simply recall not seeing any planes. Very Freaky.

What really sticks in my mind was going to NY to manage a project in Manhattan and another in Baltimore.  Both were a result of 9/11.  The completion of the projects was in the fall of 2002 and that when you had those assholes shooting people from the backseat of their car.

I also remember the constant evacuations of airport termintals in the fucking cold and standing in line to go back thru security again AND getting separated from luggage, keys, leaving crap behind because it was no longer allowed on planes, etc.

I was having a bowl of cereal and watching Charlie and Diane on GMA. The next thing I know, ABC news is showing pictures of the first tower burning. No one knew a plane had hit it and when they finally realized it, they thought it was an accident. While I was sitting there, the second plane came into view and slammed into the other tower and I immediately uttered "fucking Bin Laden finally got us". I knew about Bin Laden and was quite familiar with his activities well before 9/11. The next few moments were shock and disbelief and I can't even remember getting to work that morning. When I walked in, they'd rigged up a TV and we saw the first tower collapse. Then the second tower fell and the entire place went quiet. One of the secretaries started crying and we did no work that day. All we did was stare at the TV in utter shock and disbelief.

The best day in my life? The day Obama came on TV and announced Bin Laden had been killed.

the massive thunder of the sonic boom as those two F16's flew directly over us on the way to O'Hare. We thought there had been an explosion until we saw the fighters scream by. All of my younger neighbors were amazed at the sound of the sonic boom - they'd never heard one before. I recalled frequent sonic booms in grade school but nothing like the intensity of these fighters directly over our heads. A couple of neighbors down the street lost their windows - their houses were directly beneath the path of the planes.

Surreal to say the least. F16's flying low with live ordinance on their wings was a sight I'd never seen before. And then it became eerily silent as no planes were anywhere to be found.

watching CNBC when they switched live to NYC.  I thought initially that it was a horrific accident, but shortly thereafter it was clearly NO accident as the second plane hit.  I called my wife to tell her what I was witnessing, and she was having trouble visualizing the catastrophe in progress (no TV where she was at).

I then went upstairs to tell my son he needed to come down and look at this, as I commented that this is WWIII.  Fortunately it didn't escalate into that, but after 10 years and two wars (that I fear will continue for quite a while yet), it was imperative that this country respond.  Was this the correct way to respond...well that's a debate for another board.

And I recall walking into the backyard later that night, looked up at the heavens, and said prayers for all those lost and for those yet to be lost (as I knew that others would sacrifice to preserve our way of life!).

I had a similar experience.  While getting ready for work I was watching the first tower burning on GMA.  They were trying to sort out what happened and then on live TV the second plane hit the other tower.  It was totally surreal to say the least.

I had just boarded the Metra headed into downtown when the for tower was hit as we were just starting to hear of the explosion and fire.  People were talking about an airplane crashing into the tower, but were sure whether it was commercial or a small private plane.

By the time we got downtown, the second tower had been hit and you could tell there was a lot of confusion downtown.  People were evaluating the Sears Tower, my work sent us all home.  So quickly ran back to Union Station and got on the first train back out of the city.

It really was a day of feeling kind of devastated... From watching the towers get hit, to the raging infernos, to the people jumping from the towers, to their eventual collapse.

Luckily, my Mom had flown out of Newark the night before and my Dad had taken off from Newark just shortly before the towers were hit.  His flight though was immediately diverted to Toronto and grounded there for days.  He eventually managed to get a flight to Minneapolis where I went and picked him up.  He ended up staying about two weeks before he could get a flight back home.

I was sitting in my cubicle at work reading email, then I heard one of my colleagues down the hall "Screaming" that a plane crashed into the WTC in New York!  She was surfing the internet and saw the breaking news on Yahoo!  Then the next thing you know, we heard that a second plane crashed into the other WTC tower ...Yikes!

As soon as our VP heard the news, he had our AV dept. set up TVs in our cafeteria, so everyone at our facility could keep up with what was happening.  Our company had employees in the area, so we were all concerned about their safety.  A few of my colleagues also had relatives/friends who worked near the twin towers, so they were all going crazy trying to find out if they were okay.

1. 12/7/1941 Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor.
I was quite young, but I remember how upset my parents were. We hovered around the radio all Sunday afternoon. I wanted to play, but I couldn't go out. My parents' behavior made it memorable.

2. 11/22/1963 JFK is assinated.
I was on line for tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters. Someone from the back room of he ticket office burst in and said the President had been shot. No one knew how bad it was, just that he was being rushed to Parkland Hospital. I went to my car and listened to the news until I got home, then was glued to the TV all weekend.

3. 9/11/2001 World Trade Center destroyed, Pentagon damaged, Flight 93 crashes.
I was on the last leg of a 3 week combined business trip and vacation. I hadn't received my satellite radio yet, so I had to rely on CB and AM/FM. Running through the Ozarks, heading east from Columbia MO. Reception was terrible. Nothing but preachers on AM and Rock music on FM. Someone on the CB said a plane had flown into the WTC. They thought it was a Cessna.

My wife played with the radio trying to find news. About 9:15 am we finally got out of the mountains and could pick up KMOX St. Louis. Then we learned what actually happened. It wasn't until 1:30 pm that we got to a truck stop with TVs on display and actually saw the destruction. Normally, truck stops are happy places, where drivers who are usually alone in their cabs get together and socialize. This day, no one said a word. All eyes were on the TV sets.

We fueled, ate and left, driving three more hours to home, hardly saying a word. The radio kept repeating what we'd seen and heard, but we wouldn't turn it off.

Hell of a way to celebrate my 63rd birthday.

I still remember, because I got the the front desk and the receptionist told me someone had crash a plane into the White House.  I remember thinking that the lady must be nuttier then a fruit loop because it would never happen.  I hurried to get to my room so I could put on the news.  Sure enough they were talking about the 2nd plane crashing into the Twin Towers, and flashed to the Pentagon later.

I think that was the main topic with each of my guests that day(back when there were not as many ladies and a schedule was more busy).  It was total disbelief.

When I switched on the TV I remember going kinda numb for a few mins there, totally in shock.  Never saw anything like that coming, it was totally crazy....

I will never forget where I was because everything that happened and the way it happened were so odd.

1/28/86, I was in my Schools Commons(a common area with a big TV high on the wall) and we watched the 1st teacher ever to blast off into space, and a min in we watched the shuttle explode.  I remember as a kid how big of a deal the teachers made out of a teacher in space, so it was a huge shock when it blew up before going far.  The whole room was silent and we were a bunch of young kids.

I was in my cube when the guy next to me walked in talking about a plane crashing into the WTC.  I spent the next 15 minutes trying to get a news website up, but cnn crashed from too many hits, and most local sites didn't have the story yet.  We finally went low tech and got a couple of TV news feeds up, with everyone standing around watching.  Over the next two hours, it was utter chaos, as we tried to figure out if any of our planes were unaccounted for, while gossiping about the latest intel.

When the news came through that a tower had fallen, I refused to believe it until I saw the video.  When we left work that day, many of us went to a local bar, and continued watching the feeds in disbelief.

And I was driving into the office listening to news.  When I got in, we set up a television ihe conference room and were watching the news.  A call came in from corporate to shut down the office as we were too close to the airport and there was concern about our safety.  They also closed it office at the Sears Tower.

The bad news. Sat glued to the tv the whole day and couldn't believe my eyes. America, my adopted country, as I knew and had grown fond of had changed in that one day.

We didn't have the tv on, so thought he was pulling our leg-- he said to turn on CNN. What a morning. In later days, every group sought contributions for the heroes and families. Firemen at intersections had empty boots to be filled. I believe this went overboard. The "families" became politicized and demanded this and that. Still demanding.

Heard the news about the first plane hitting, thought it was just some single-engine prop that had gone off course. A few minutes later, they interrupted to say that another one had hit. Ran up the stairs to the office and we all gathered around a TV in the lounge.

Working in a high-rise near the Tribune building, the powers-that-be decided to close down in case Chicago was also on the list. Drive home sick to my stomach and watched the next few hours on the tube. I'll never forget how horrible I felt.

It happened between the time I parked my car in the lot and walking to my desk. We had a TV on in the conference room and were watching the first tower when the 2nd plane hit. Hardly any work got done that day. Then we found out one of our Reps was on the plane that crashed into the field. We don't know, but he was the type of guy who would try to stop the terriosts.

My office was right at the end on one of the runways by O'Hare. It was very strange not seeing or hearing any planes for the next few days, except for the fighters that were flying around and taking off and landing.

It is still a sad spot in my heart and I hope everyone in the US is safe this Sunday and the warnings of a terrorist hit here in the US does not come true.

I stayed home from college that day and was cleaning my apartment.  My 2 year old was with me and my 6 year old was in school.  After he got home, I had to explain to him, in kid terms, what had happen.  It was all over the news and there was no way he wouldn't see or hear about it.  I wanted to prepare him for what he might hear in school the next day.  I had nightmares for weeks after that.
