There is nothing to protect you from HSV-2 especially during asymptomatic shedding. HSV spreads by skin to skin contact and not bodily fluids so condoms don't protect you. It can enter a male body through his testicles or mouth and a guy having asymptomatic shedding can give to the lady when his testicles touch the skin near her vagina.  
A study done of sex workers in London showed that 60% of them had HSV-2. This what the study said, "We show that a cohort of sex workers with extensive condom use and little known sexually transmitted infection have high levels of HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection, suggesting that condoms may not be universally protective.
