Just do not accept the invite and no worries simple.

Just a note for some providers and others.  When you allow Linkedin access to your email it generates invitaions to EVERYONE you have sent an email.  This morning (it has happened before), I got an invitation from a young woman with a proffesional job.  I didnt know her name but upon closer examination she is a provider I have visited.  The busness suit and dorky glasses threw me off at first. Of course, now I know her real name, occupation and work place.  I have no use for that information but I assume most providers would prefer that information was not shared.  Like I said, this is not the first time this has happened.  I assume she has a hobby email but she must have given Linkedin access to all her accounts.  On the other hand, if I had accepted the invitation she would have know everything about me too!  That could have been her goal.  Be careful

Please be careful if you have a real career on LinkedIn. This is our jobs, our livelihood and the last thing we need is to be contacted by an escort no matter how innocent it is. Please make sure our hobby emails are not on your LinkedIn list and please don't contact us there under any circumstances. We have no way to explain how we know you. Hobbyists, never accept an invitation from a woman you don't already know professionally outside this business. Potential employers check out your contact list during job screenings - be careful.

I just wonder if people consider it useful--to be taken seriously for networking, etc.

Yes, it is used quite a bit among many business people.  Business to business sales people, especially, make heavy use of it.

of networking and social/internet media. Analyzing the way one sells themself on a professional network, and how successful they are at networking with other professionals via these online resources could be a way to find star people who know how to grow a business… if they can sell themselves, they can sell your business.

I don't believe using LinkedIn a waste of time. If anything, it shows someone is willing to exhaust resources to better themselves. Going a tad further, if this person is involved in discussion groups and is giving good input, educating others with their knowledge… cha-ching! You've got a mentor.

If you use it right, you're golden.

LinkedIn is a fantastic tool, and not just for HR. It's also a great tool for networking and marketing. Utility probably varies by industry, but I've had good success using it to make connections at companies I want to get to know better. Find lots of times people are more responsive to a Linkedin message than an unsolicited email.

Will be using social media in no time. Within the past two years it's grown tremendously and will be undeniably important for growth. If people don't jump on these opportunities, they're missing out.

Watch how much LinkedIn grows this year. But look out for how much twitter FB and Google plus grow. It seems people are using those for business networking. Everybody wants to be FB friends w their co-workers lol.

By the way...totally down on FB. No thanks!

If used correctly, Facebook can really benefit someone… but it can also hurt them. You have to choose based on how much self control you have.

OTOH, just come to TER when you feel like letting yourself go verbally, hahaha

Professional recruiters use it heavily and it must be kept pristine - meaning that there can be no links to providers in any way shape or form.

This has also happened to me, though the provider's working name accompanied the invitation, and it was thus easy to ignore.

This should serve as a cautionary tale about social media and one's online identity or identities.

The tinfoil hat crowd obsesses about NSA "eavesdropping,"  but the far more immediate worry comes from Big Brother Zuckerberg, et al., and their algorithms.

hookers and Johns. Maybe the big timers who aren't submitting their taxes… but I highly doubt BB is going to call your work and say, "Hey, John Doe is linked with a hooker."

IDK tho. Money is money!

The other time it happened to me, the provider was a realtor.  Then, I realized her incalls were condos that she was selling.

Just do not accept the invite and no worries simple.

ased on the volume of messages I got, I assume that most realtors are escorts and that most condos for sale are used as incalls

What's her number again? LOL

many providers are ex-realtors or go into that field after they retire so there is a strong correlation between realtors and providers.

I use a separate personal email account for hobby. This way all my other accounts and profiles are completely separate from hobby ones. Even if i get an invitation on this email, it is not linked with linked in or facebook or any other social media platforms
