It's worth it to travel lighter to avoid the jarring stop and start of the expressways.  
And I am very selective about my cab drivers.  Certain guys on the phone, from a culture that has no respect for women...?  I'll pass.  Almost went fisticuffs with one asshole.

But we forgive you, Chicago is a great city!

They'll run you over in a NY minute and this isn't NY, lol. Whatever you do, don't accidentally step into any reserved bike lanes, people get run over :-)

If you'd like I can show you the basics on the EL. I definitely recommend taking the trains or CABS. I even take them when I am downtown because it is so much less headache! BUT I do think they have switched from the buscards to that new system. So that might be a whole new headache. I took the red line the other day and the lines to get a bus card were INSANE!
