Just call ahead and ask before you book. I've always checked into hotels around noon or one, sometimes before that if I have an early appointment and that includes downtown hotels.  Seriously,  just call.

This is exactly what you do. They always tell you to call the day you are coming in (the earlier the better) and they generally will have your room ready for you. Just make sure to be pleasant. I always give a tip to the front reception person and anyone else just because I am curious. They will do anything for you after that.
I always stay in the Oak Brook area and have never had a problem. Good luck and have LOADS and LOADS of fun!!

hotels often will let you check in earlier if they can and if you say you may get there earlier in advance x
