Man created it from his need. Remember woman until very recently have always been secondary. I am not sure woman in the time this the "oldest of professions" was created would have known to ask for something in return. Likely a man wanted to bed a woman and offered her a large pc of meat from an animal he hunted, she gladly gave herself for the chance to survive. Most industry was created from need, I see this one starting that way as well.

That's probably exactly how it started...

and cave man number two offered a bigger piece of meat so she chose him, and a million years later we think all women prefer the guy with the biggest meat

I don't think she cared about the size of the meat... She definitely liked the fur, so...

She offered to cook his bigger meat for him for all the fur in return. For the better convincing that she needed more fur, she even shaved herself. She also promised she won't be following him the next day. Man had a nicely cooked dinner, felt good about himself for helping one in need, and he didn't have to commit. Soon enough and most of the smart men realized that when they care, they'll be taken care of.. It is easier when there is a demand ready to be served, but creating demand is more fun sometimes. Some women don't shave even these days, but it's probably because they try to stand out, creating variety exposing the long curves everywhere..., or just out of razors. In that case, they could easily ask donation in razors. Brainstorming
