Dining at a restaurant, how much of a tip is appropriate?

Is a tip customary when staying at a hotel? If so, how much is appropriate to leave the cleaning staff?

A few drinks at the bar, do you tip a certain % or $1 per drink?

Do you tip your hair stylist? If so, what's appropriate?

What about the taxi driver?

I don't tip on a job well done. I think doing your job well is an expectation. If someone meets my expectation they get repeat business from me.

I also will not tip if my bill contains a gratitude expense. I never could understand why a business would place that on my bill for, forcing me to leave them a tip. I also don't tip if someone asks for a tip. I actually had a cab driver do this to me before as I was fishing in my pocket for it. I getting give him one and left.

I usually leave tips for wait staff. Most of the time their employer isn't paying them well enough as it is, so I try to make up for the stinginess of the one percent by leaving them something. I'll also tip for those that I see regularly and have some I see on a regular basis. For example, I loved, LOVED a hairstylist that I use to see in college and use to tip him generously.

Tipping goes

food is now 20%  but for me if its bad service i just do 10% "hey the person did bring out the food and took the order, so Im fair about that"

drinks are $1 tip unless there is a hookup from the bar

cleaning staff thats up too you.... For me when i stay at the hotel, I pile up the towels to one area of the bathroom.

hair stylist, yes if you plan to return to the person. I have over 5 plus years.

taxi driver depends on how long the drive is.

Waiters and waitresses (min 20% up to 33%), the pizza delivery guy ($5 - $7), the guy at the car wash $2 - $10), I over tip them all.  Those are minimum wage (or lower) paying jobs.  They are probably trying to raise a family, so I feel better thinking that I made their life a little easier.  I always ignore the tip jar for counter type service.  I find those jars rude and offensive.  I rarely tip on high priced services, or a hotel room unless I am staying for a week.

go up from there.  A waitress/er has to do a really horrible job for me to give them less than that.  I have wavy hair... it is waving goodbye so he/she gets 2-3 bucks for the 187 secondss they spent buzzing the sides.... :-0>  cab driver is the same as waitress/er.  

I hate when I am out to dinner with someone and the server was off the charts awesome and the person(s) I am with get out the calculator to figure out the 15%....are u serious?!  This person gets $2.00 an hour plus tips.  That same guy will throw 100 at a girl in a g-string in a new yawk second!!! LOL!

Waiters/Waitresses in IL only make $3-4 per hour.  If they do good you should tip 15-20%.  Average Service 10%, and bad service 0-5%.

They should try to do well since they need the tips to survive.

I think it depends on a few things

If I go for breakfast and it's only a few bucks for a couple eggs and toast I'll always tip at least 5.00 if they were friendly and attentive.

Pizza guys, minimum 5.00 too, more if they came a long way, weather bad, etc.

Of course, if I'm by myself, I usually do about 30% or more because it takes just as much work to take one order as it does two and I don't want the waitperson to suffer because I'm there alone.
