I visit with a few gentlemen per week when in DC, and a few per day, when traveling. Most of my dates are multi hour, and I enjoy the anticipation, of meeting a new friend for lunch, cocktails, dinner, etc. It's like getting ready for a first date! Like the OP said, you also have time to build a bit of a rapport, which only makes for a more stimulating experience.
While I can, at times, honor a same day request, it is usually because I have visited with the gentleman before.

I normally plan 1 or 2 weeks in advance, but I'm finding my encounters are more fulfilling on short notice (sameday)... This is just me. Everyone is different... I think with longer planning there is to much time playing it out in my head... The actual has a hard time living up with the imagined, both for her and for me. LOL.. Live in the moment, right.
The problem I have have with short notice is settling for who's available over who you want. That can be a real FN bummer, so sometimes you just have say no and walk away, rather than gut through a terrible provider or ripoff.
Planning works better for me, but I really enjoy a heightened sense of arousal with short notice...
some of us have to be utr at times and dont want to post an "ad".. so we can pm a person of interest and open up the line of LUST and begin the dance directly

I don't plan because I normally with someone. ISOs are last minute when I need to get a game going.

I totally agree that advanced planning of a "special" sexy encounter is the way to go. Both parties are thoroughly cleared ahead of time and I love the exchange of fun and flirty email exchanges or phone calls that lead up to the "special" rendezvous that is sooo looked forward to. Anticipation is the greatest expectation of a well planned encounter that will be a lasting memory for both with hopefully more to follow, leaving both parties on the edge of their erotic seats until that happens again. Being with a gent that plans in advance, you can expect being with a very classy smart man that will make your "special" nite an awesome time and I have been lucky enough to be in that position. I usually start planning a few weeks before visiting a city for business.
Unfortunately, even confirmed dates have been known to cancel (with very little warning).
That is where an ISO can really help out. Recently, I have also assebled a backup list - just in case of a cancellation.
In terms of work, it is almost impossible to properly screen a new gent in time to make an ISO happen. But, man do I try hard. I definitely understand the urgency of having to have something at JUST that moment. And I think it is totally hot to be a respondent to someone's urgent need.
