The account was hacked into.  If someone actually provides monetary funds, then they are an absolute moron.  Plus, anytime anyone is begging for money, don't answer.  Either a hacker is behind it or the lady is desperate and will scam you.  It is bad enough that we've had some legit ladies not return deposits to clients.  Be on your guard.

If you have a weak or short password it can be hacked by any person who has the right software.

Once someone has your password there is almost no end to the trouble they can cause.

You need a password that is both long and contains enough "odd" characters and numbers. This link can help you.

I received an e-mail from a known lady posting here asking for monitary help. I think it might be a scam so I replied and asked if it was legit and got a reply back from the same address saying yes it is me. The problem I have is that I only saw this lady once and don't know her too well so I can't ask any personal questions she would be able to answer, Plus yje IPs in the mail headers don't add up.

Anyone else having a similar problem?

I got one, too. Instead of hitting "Reply," I looked up her address and forwarded the note I received with a simple question: "Is this from you?"

The response I got repeated the plea for help (which I politely declined). I wonder if she knows her account has been hijacked. The request is to wire funds overseas -- a definite red flag.

Yes, her email has been hijacked.  I notified the provider via text this morning to let her know.  She was already aware of it and had taken the necessary actions to fix it.

Looks like everyone on her email list got the email from her even providers are getting it. If it's not her then at least she should atleast clarify this on TER. If it's really her then I can feel sorry for her but can't wire the funds to the Queen
Dosent looks like she has written that email.

Recently few providers are asking for money with stories like they are broke someone steal their money and some other excuses. Just because a Client is Nice dosent mean he is stupid too.

This is such a fucking nightmare!  My phone is getting blown up by questions.  Here are my answers:

1.  No, I am not in the UK.

2.  No,  I do not need any help.

3.  Yes, I am taking the appropriate measures to shut down my account (once I can actually access it).  My new e-mail is [email protected] and I will be changing my number and website soon as well so bear with me as I have never been through this before...

My brain hurts and I just wanna fuck and go shopping like any other normal redblooded American girl-arrrgggghhh!!!!

In addition to having a strong password. Remember these things:

When connecting your laptop through a hotel or any wifi network connection always make sure you are already on a secure connection BEFORE typing in your password. You can tell if the connection is secure when the URL in the address bar begins with HTTPS not HTTP. Some web mail clients do not switch to secure mode until AFTER you type in the password. By then it can be too late.

Even more importantly, do NOT entire passwords when using a public computer or any computer that is not yours. If you absolutely must contact someone via email from the hotel business center then plan ahead. Set up a secondary email account that you wouldn’t care too much if it was hacked. Do not use your primary email account.

If you mess up and misuse a public computer then run, don’t walk to your secure connection point and change your password as soon as possible.

And always run a good firewall on your own computer.

Looking back, they think the password was actually stolen while using the computer on the network at the college where she works, so in that case, it had to do with network security, and not the strength, or weakness, of the password. I think that in most cases that is how it works.

And they kept changing her password, sent out multiple waves of these emails over almost a two week period. Once they were done, she did get her email account back and all was well, other than the fact that they went through and deleted most of her email. So, in addition to the email scam, and perhaps most important, go through your email accounts and make sure there is no confidential information that would allow someone to steal your identity or hack into any financial accounts you might have.

I suppose it is possible they will try to use other information they may find, but I think they are pretty focused on their scam. I like to think the correspondence would make for entertaining reading, though...

It was a nightmare for her, too, Giselle, but the good news is that one does have to be an idiot to send money to these s**theads. The emails seem plausible enough until you start thinking about them and then you have to conclude it is a scam. Yeah, I am going to wire a few thousand dollars overseas based on a single email sent to me - not even for my sister, no way.

I heard that changing my password religiously is conducive to my privacy.  I had no idea that this sort of crazy behavior was a normal thing and occurs all the time.  I guess you just have to live and learn; sadly, I had to learn the hard way but what are you gonna do?:(

Thank you to all that were concerned...

A couple weeks ago, I got a call. "Do you know who this is?" My antenna reared. The press here in Fla. often has stories about seniors who have sent off money to callers who claim to be a grandchild in trouble, so I suspected that's what this call was. I played along for ten minutes and had a blast. Finally I said, "I'm confused, however. I don't have a grandson." Click. He was gone.
