Here is an idea that may serve as a compromise

I was just sent a PM from a genius of a man who shall remain nameless.

While the discussion of this proposed change in the law is an obvious hot button and obviously a topic very worthy of discussion, it's place is not on this board.

In an attempt to compromise, I will allow a thread to be started here that directs everyone to the Legal Board and to an ongoing discussion of that topic over there.

Please understand that this board is moderated by two guys who have no legal training. Speaking only for myself, not living in Illinois any longer, I do not have the access to the daily changes that take place in Springfield. It puts me in a difficult position because I do not have any information about this subject and no way of knowing if the subject material is true or false or somewhere in between. It's like asking me to be a relationship counselor, I'd suck at that too.

For your own benefit take the discussion to the Legal Board. The Moderator on that board is a practicing attorney, he's much more aware of the law than I am and maybe Sojourner too. If this ridiculous law is passed, it will just be a matter of time in my opinion before other states try and enact similiar laws also. Maybe the masses can put preasure on those stupid politicians up there in Illinios and keep them from passing this legislation.

I hope you all understand how I hate to do this because I am an adament believer in free speech, even when I totally disagree with what is being said. However, in this situation, the potential for someone to act on advice that was dispensed on the Chicago discussion board and was totally inaccurate/wrong, could potentially cause TER a legal problem. I would be remiss in my duties to TER if I allowed the continuance of these discussions on this board.

Let me know what the board thinks of this idea. If you guys hate it, say so. You all know me well enough to know that you won't offend me. I will try my best to accommodate all of your wishes. This is your board, not mine, and I always try to remember that every time on sign on.

Thanks,

FT61

. . . where the tools are posted doesn't matter.  Just my two cents.

I put a post about this on the legal board a week ago and no one from Chicago is reading it. All the replies are from shocked people in other states. How do you have a discussion that is specific to Chicago on some other board that Chicagoans don't read?

Sorry FT, but by forcing the discussion to another board, you've pretty much killed the discussion.

I think it's best to point the legal board moderator to our discussion board than to point chicagoans to the legal board. It's more or less an 'emergency' and unique situation. No other state is having a law like this pending, so offering input here is appreciated.

More people will be able to read here, and this is the board where Chicago attorneys and those in the Chicago community that might have some knowledge are more prone to respond on.

None of the advice you receive there or anywhere on TER should be taken literally or at face value. There are many opinions offered on the Legal Board as well as every other board on TER that while well intentioned, are offered by people who don't have a clue to what they are talking about. Just because a board is moderated by a praticing attorney doesn't change that fact.

I welcome the discussion on the GD Board, but the same caveat holds true. Don't base your hobbying, or business decisions soley on what some anonymous poster on an internet site has to say, not if you value your freedom at least.

The people that think this is serious will continue to think that.  Those same people are trying to HELP you, Mike.  No one wants to hurt your business.  Telling people this is just Chicken Little doesn't persuade anyone who doesnt' want to be persuaded.
I tell you, if I owned an agency right now I'd keep the lowest possible profile and I sure wouldn't be publically telling people this new law is nothing to worry about.

In fact I would encourage anything that has an attitude of a solution.  I am opposed to people getting on here and painting a picture that venus and mars are going to collide, we are all doomed and there is nothing we can do about it!

I never used the words chicken little.... You did.... Twice now!

I am opposed to someone getting on here every two days with a reminder to the date Aug 24 and the clock is ticking!  Btw, didn't somebody state on here that if the gov does not sign, it becomes law by default?  I mean, i am not a lawyer or anything but the way I read it, it must be signed in order to become law.  This is the kind of stuff i am opposed to.  Kind of like when the year 2000 was approaching and all of our computers were going to turn into mush!

I posted a thread on this subject on the political board this morning and there are some interesting responses.  Two of them from lawyers, one of which was a prosecuter for 10 years and is now a defense lawyer.  Both of them sound credible and get this.  They both feel that the panic being spread is over exagerated.  feel free to read their posts yourselves!  It is the thread started by yours truly and the two lawyers are "paddy98" and "marikod".

Go figure!
