What you describe is exactly how it happened for me. I watched a lot of porn, hung around with a big-time porn star for a year and a half and then started checking out Eros ads. I went from porn to chat rooms, which are much more personal and interactive; much better than watching videos. It was still my own hand doing the work though. I think it was something about the secrecy of the video interactions that gave me a middle ground working toward the hobby.
