I came across an interesting article -- ok, it's from 2008, but it's new to me -- in the Scientific American about why men buy sex.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=why-do-men-buy-sex

It was an interesting read to me.  Specifically, it was interesting to me the prevalence of men buying sex depending on country and looking at this aspect of male behavior through a scientific lens rather than a discussion about morality.

Hard to do more than react to the summary. Want to tell us what info you found interesting?

On the TEH board, LG posted on some good reading materials and her own research on related topics. There also were some good discussions, at least for me. As a fellow hobbyist once aptly said to me, "there are two types of hobbyists - those who want to understand what is going on, and those who just want the fun." True, and also true of providers: some of the more thoughtful ones have just as interesting and valid views on why we hobby.

There is no one answer, btw, even for a particular hobbyist. He might like control, might like to be able to do things he would not otherwise get to do, he might do it because it makes him feel good and he can do it, all of the above, or something different.
