Oven Grinders - They have the best Pizza Pies!
Piece Pizzeria - I think it's the best thin crust I have found so far.
Lou Malnati's - It was good, but I think the sauce is spicy.
Giordano's -  Good.
Pat's Pizza - Very good.
Art of Pizza - Wonderful.
Gino's - OK

If you have a chance go to oven grinders, check out their website and reviews. I am in luv with that place!

And my list of places will continue to grow as I visit new places.

Enjoy!
Amber - I luv pizza!

Hi everyone!

Can someone recommend where I can get a good..no, great slice of traditional deep-dish Chicago pizza? I have yet to try a slice a Chicago pizza and I would like to while I'm there.  I'm a NYer living in LA, and being that pizza is my favorite food but there isn't really good pizza in LA, I'm dying for a great slice of something tasty and authentic.  Yes, I know that Chi pizza is not to be compared to NY pizza, I wouldn't dream of offending Chicago in that way.  :-)

I went to use Yelp but then I realized that the best way to get to know a city is to talk directly to the people who live in it.

I'll be staying downtown when I visit so it would be helpful if there was a place nearby since I have no clue where I'm going.  However, if the pizza is that great, I'll pay for the cab ride to take me to it.

Thanks!

Purists will tell you to visit either the original Geno's, Uno's or Dues downtown.  Younger people prefer Lou Malnati's and Giordono's (if you can find any still open.

Thank you for the recommendation on the pizza!

Unfortunately I don't eat meat, so Chicago hot dogs are out.

....and then this is the part where the guy says something like, "Well, I've got another type of Chicago hot dog you can try," as he saunters forward with his best imitation of an ultra-suave and extra deep voice, one raised eye-brow and one hand on his...you get it.

Just playful jesting...you are most certainly not that cartoony guy I was describing.  :-)

Again, thanks for the help with the pizza!

Ah, this is a good list!  Thank you, Amber!

I am really surprised by the all the differing opinions and all the passion for pizza from everyone.  I love it, it makes me feel at home in a weird way.

I think that discussion left out Pizza Hut - hahaha.  Yeah, um, I've noticed the pizza thing come up quite often.  Why is that?

Many great suggestions made.  Pizzeria Uno is an original, but they have franchises in other cities as well now.  Lou Malnati's won't disappoint you.  Gino's has a cornbread based crust, but they have gone down hill over the years.  Connie's is a favorite (I do it once a week) and Nancy's is fabulous, but better know for their stuffed pizza (another Chicago delicacy)

I thought they were sold to Angelina's. Angelina's... that was a shock, nowhere near as good as Nancy's, I actually took it back for a refund because the crust was soggy.

I've been all over the US and the world, and hands down Chicago is the pizza capital of the planet. If you want "tourist" go to the big name joints. If you want real Chicago pizza, leave the hotel and walk to the place on the corner, order a pitcher and a pie and hog down. Real Chicago pizza is being reinvented every day in a corner joint near you.

Welcome to Chicago. The only major city in the world worth living in.
