I think in order to find a perfect gift you need to know a little about the lady you're visiting. Many ladies have places on their web page that will give hints as to their favorite things/activities. Does she like to read? Does she enjoy sports? Does she garden? Travel? The list has endless possibilities.
In my opinion anything scented..candles, lotions, perfumes..can be a bad idea unless you know what her favorites are. I'm a smell good kind of girl so I love my scents, but my taste are limited to a certain few scents. For a lady with allergies they can be the worst gift ever though I'm sure the thought behind them is still much appreciated. While the thought is never unappreciated, I will be honest and say it's much nicer to recieve a gift you can and will use.
I find it's hard to go wrong with restaurant gift cards simply because most places offer a variety of menu items from which to choose. There's bound to be SOMETHING on the menu she'll like. And everyone has to eat now and then.
Also, gift cards to lingerie stores are a nice thought. I generally tend to save whatever I buy with the card to wear for the person who purchased it first(assuming he plans a return visit) just as a gesture of my own appreciation. Lingerie is delicate and doesn't tend to last very long so replacing it is a constant necessity.
I have a friend who always brings in two bottles of wine when he visits. One for us to share during our time together and another for me to keep and take home. But again, he has seen me previously and he knows I enjoy a good bottle of wine. I have always been touched by thought of bringing one to share and then one for later. I guess because when I do decide to open the second bottle I am always reminded of our time together. Sentiment is very hard to beat!
Whatever the gift, it truly is the thought and extra effort that goes into purchasing it that counts. Gifts are extras that go above and beyond the expected and that alone is what makes them extra special.
