It's not hopeless. I just went through this and found a provider with a great review history and who was very professional in her business conduct.
Find a well-reviewed provider with a very good track record and consider giving her your employment information for verification. Also, register through Preferred411 and/or Date-Check. Having these will go a long way toward making her feel more comfortable about your situation.

See what she requires, and skip the ones that ask for references, at least for now. They usually have other ways to verify that you are ok.
