I have let my VIP membership lapse - not really ready to renew it and now I get a message that I have "new mail". Aggravation is that I can't get to it. Apparently not -- when I click the envelope it asks me to log in. I do that and I am told that since I have only a BASIC membership I can't access that feature. Bummer.
No the envelope just signifies that you are posting in your username rather than an ALIAS. There is no way to tell whether somebody is a VIP member. TER's position is that they don't want to show a distinction between Basic and VIP members. So there is no way to determine someone's membership status unless they tell you.
So -- people can send me mail -- I just can't read it until I am ready reinstate my full vip membership. I guess that's one way to get people to join the paying side.
