I even know one that uses their civie phone, despite me telling them that is not wise.

Some use an extra phone on their "family" plan, and some use a cash only pre-paid phone (my belief this is wisest, although I have slipped a couple of times and paid for a pre-paid card using a credit card).

It's all about what is comfortable, for you.  

Want only one phone, then use a burner app, but those rates are higher than a physical phone.
Cheapest may be to add a phone on your current plan, but then that number is associated with your real self.
Burner Phones paid in cash with cash payments for refill cards, can be a pain as you have to purchase the cards, for privacy very good

You can use most existing Verizon phones if you have one, buy one from them, or anywhere really.
