Historical fact: in ancient civilizations, like India's, which thrived for centuries, "providers" would parade on a float during religious holidays and all the townspeople would shower flowers on them from the rooftops and balconies.

It was believed that; they assisted in keeping freaks and weirdos from fouling the 12 y/o virgins, and, they preserved the family structure. Because when the old wives weren't having it anymore, all fun would be kept in a seperate place, and then the dirty old men would have to go back to their duties.

So, not only were they legal, they were protected by the warrior class. If anybody messed with them, they could get their head cut off, or their dick chopped off.

Part of it - a translation of the "Srimad-Bhagavatam" (Vedic text) reviewed by Oxford and Harvard scholars. (Don't have the publication info, I write from memory). If you do a Google search on "devidasis" or "devadasis" you will find all kinds of things! But India of course is notorious for their conflicting views on you name it.

I have seen a few ancient movies on this also. One of the movies about providers/mistress showed how cruel the city was to them. They hated the mistress's.They would stone the ladies and curse at the mistress, But it was almost all the men in the city , including the king  who seen the mistress's. It was against the religion and the city would take the mistress before the court/city and put them on trial. Right off the top of my head i cant recall the name of the movie  but its a very good one and id love to see it again..  
Maybe someone could help me out on the name of the movie...

The movie was called... "Stone the Bitches", or maybe it was "Bitches With Big Stones", sorry, those were the warriors with the big stones.

"Malena" is another. Italian w/subtitles. Set during Mussolini's time, she is a suspected mistress, has a 12 y/o stalker, and is a victim of old wives' malicious gossip (by now you might have guessed the end). Not ancient, but a great film.

To wax serious, I was moved by the movie "The Way of All Flesh"
It came out in the 30s, and was about a man(I think it was Akim Tamiroff) who was enticed by a beautiful woman, a "one nite stand". His life was destroyed, he lost his family, a train ran over a hobo's body, and the body was identified as being his. He remained a hobo for 25 years. After all these years, he knocked on the door of his old home,(this was at Xmas time). His grownup son came to the door with his grandson and the hobo's other children.... no one recognized him, they offered him food, which he declined, and then he left, in the newly falling snow, a broken downhearted man, who had given his life for a fling with a "scarlet woman".
Do you think that there is a moral here??
