The 50th anniversary is today
When I first moved to the Carolinas in 1997, they did not recognize or celebrate MLK's birthday, so I find it refreshing that they are celebrating this day of days.
You've come a long way, Carolina!

Wow. Thank you so much for posting that, I literally had no idea this was the case. I moved to the Carolinas shortly after you, in 2001, and by then I honestly couldn't sense overt racial tension in the area. Mind you, I've been living in the Triangle for most of my time in NC, which IMO is an entirely separate microcosm of the South, in many ways.  

But again, thank you for informing us who didn't know how recent change has been in the Carolinas, and for reminding those who don't remember that it hasn't been too long.
