I would suggest checking some of the artist portfolio sites in the area to start with.  
I don't live in the Triad area, and I don't do anything beyond "PG-13 Rated", so I am not the person you are looking for, but having been one who did photography in the past and considering getting back into it, this is my advice:
1.  Ask if they have references. These can be other persons who can vouch for them, online portfolios, or other online works such as past provider ads that used their work. Not all have work they can share as any respectable source will respect the wishes of those recorded first and require their consent to share.
2. When discussing the arrangement, ask about consent and release/limitation forms. If they act unsure or don't have them ready, they are probably pretty amateur. These are mandatory in my opinion as they can help protect you and the recording parties from legal issues and other related headaches.
3. Always meet first publicly to discuss with all parties involved. This allows you to get a feel for the person(s) and back out if they make you feel uncomfortable and gives them the same opportunity as well.
