Local, state and federal police arrested 21 people during two days last week in Chatham County in an operation targeting prostitution.
Seven women were arrested for prostitution, one man for pimping and 13 men for pandering, said Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Julian Miller. The operation was conducted by detectives from the metro police department’s Savannah Area Regional Intelligence Center and crime suppression units from two precincts as well as police from Pooler, Garden City, Port Wentworth, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security.
The operations were conducted Oct. 29 through Friday in hotels and motels frequented by users of the website BackPage.com, Miller said. The national website offers advertising for services in varied cities, and some hotels along Interstate 95 from the Ga. 204 exit near Savannah through Pooler, Garden City and Port Wentworth are used by customers, he said.
The Oct. 29 operation focused on midtown Savannah and Friday’s operation was directed toward hotels near the interstate exits.
Undercover operatives arranged dates with women advertising on the website and other officers advertised as prostitutes themselves to arrange dates at other hotels, Miller said.
