With the big bust, and not the fun motorboatin kind, that just happened in the CLT do the ladies and or guys consider the to be a difference between the word prostitute and escort. The news tends to use them interchangeably but I think the P-word conjures up images of nasty crack heads were as the E-word conjures up an enjoyable evening of drinks and entertainment.
To the people writing the newspaper stories, there's no difference at all. Any woman, (to them) who gets paid, is a prostitute, hooker, whore, or any other unpleasantry you'd like to throw in. To them, the word escort is probably just another way of saying the same thing.
I think that most of the people you'll find here will see a definite difference. I get the same pictures as you do when you put the two words side by side. Just the word "prostitute" does bring a picture to mind of a streetwalker.
The ladies I see are just that, ladies, and I prefer the term "escorts".
When that poor woman was murdered in Boston they kept calling her a "prostitute" the first fews days when it broke. This young woman had a family in NY. Finally enough people were outraged that she was being victumized after her death, and so was her family who had no idea of her double life, so the press started calling her a masseuse.
And LE does it to make the bust seem more neccessary. Which sounds better to the public...them busting escorts or prostitutes?
