So glad You are okay !!  I agree you should take something to make a lot of noise....plus make sure someone knows exactly where you are if you are hiking alone..

Scary stuff !

and since I am not a hot copper...I will want to make sure you stay in one piece..

that is specifically used for bears that you can get.   Can't blame him for wanting to eat you, I have that same desire often ( figuratively speaking..LOL).  Not a copper but would love to handcuff you and play around.  Glad you are safe!

And I'm not talking about the cute and cuddly kind with his head between my legs either!  LOL!!

Probably the most scary moment I've ever had in my life...never got face to face with it, but it grunted (twice) and moaned (also not in a pleasurable way) at me as a warning to GTF out of there. =@    And you bet I did, while talking VERY loudly!   =S    I think I'm going to start carrying a blow horn with me when hiking.  I'd prefer to take my gun, but it's not allowed on state/federal property and I'm a good girl who doesn't want to get thrown in the slammer.  Unless it's role play only with a hot copper.  ;)

The Ohio State Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while hiking.

They advise people to wear noise producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bear unexpectedly. They also advise carrying pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity and know the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings.

Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray

Exactly my thinking.  I don't have to be able to outrun a bear, just whoever happens to be with me at the time :)

I've had several bear encounters, over the years.  They usually grunt and take off.   This time of year can be tricky 'cause they are searching for food for winter.   Females are probably pregnant and a little "owly"........   good to hear all is well!!!!   yes.....get the horn and have something to beat and make noise!!!!!!

You have a valid concealed carry permit.

Carry Allowed in these Areas:
State Parks: YES § 14-415.11. (c1)
State/National Forests YES
State Owned Hunting & Fishing Reservation: YES § 14-415.11. (c3)
Road Side Rest Areas: YES § 14-415.11. (c3)

you could always use it to shoot your partner in the leg so he can't run a fast.

Think about this for a second before you decide to not carry some protection.

Would you rather explain to St. Peter why you chose to not protect yourself or would you rather explain to a judge/jury why you were carrying to protect yourself?

It's always better to tried by twelve, than carried by six.

North Carolina G.S. 14-415.11 as rewritten: says "Any person who has a concealed handgun permit may carry a concealed handgun on the grounds or waters of a park within the State Parks System as defined in G.S. 113-44.9."

Not that I'm an activist, but I think I'd be writing to the State Parks System and ask why they weren't in compliance with the law.  Especially when they know there was dangerous wildlife on park grounds.

Also, the North Carolina State Parks webpage references that   "Firearms and other weapons are prohibited except that those with a proper permit may possess a concealed handgun under the requirements of North Carolina G.S. 14-415.11".

I'm gonna carry my weapon when I feel I need to.  A nature walk would be one of those times.

Note the part about visitors centers and offices and the Federal law exceptions.

Guns and Fireworks

Firearms and other weapons are prohibited except that those with a proper permit may possess a concealed handgun in permitted areas and under the requirements of North Carolina G.S. 14-415.11. All firearms and weapons are prohibited in state park visitor centers and park offices. (EXCEPTION: Federal law (36 C.F.R. ¤ 327.13) prohibits loaded firearms or ammunition on those lands and waters at Falls Lake, Jordan Lake and Kerr Lake state recreation areas managed by the state parks system and owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.)

Fireworks, cap pistols, air guns, bows and arrows, slingshots and lethal projectiles or missiles of any kind are prohibited on all properties managed by the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.

Have been stalked by panthers in both Oregon and Florida---had a 308 caliber rifle with me in Oregon, so, while the hair stood up on the back of my neck, I was not too worried, however, in Florida, I only had a 6-inch Buck knife and it was late at night, and the dam things kept crashing through the palmetto thickets just out of my light, then, after putting our head down for the night, one of them(later found out it was a cub and momma) made a run at the head of my tube tent but stopped when I yelled and put the bright light on the area it was coming through! Settled down for the night, and slept in fits and starts, and next morning, as I was crawling out of the tent, there on the ground in the white sand within 2 feet of my tent was the tracks of a large one(momma) and a smaller one(cub) who had walked by!!! Glad they were not interested in a late night snack---LOL

Don't get me started on animals/snakes/big foot in the wilds! All have attempted to get at me, yes, BF exists, or existed in CA in the 60s, who knows now, but that thing that screamed at us in the night, while we were parked in the middle of no where to sleep for the night was nothing I have heard from bear, panther, or any other wild creature in my years in the forests around this land!!!

Yup! My weapon is with me at all times now in the woods!

i hope you are alright..that bear must have reminded you of most of your clients..the ones that grunt and moan a lot but are basically harmless unless they want some julia to snack on..
