And since this is the Boston Board, it may be noted that Chocolate Thunder and the Sixers were a nemesis of the Boston Celtics. "Dawkins was called upon to help the Sixers in their playoff run, to battle Dave Cowens of the Celtics and Moses Malone of the Rockets. The Sixers won both playoff series and advanced to the NBA Finals."
.
DD was the first player to be drafted into the NBA directly out of high school, without a college edumacation.  And he did all right by that!

Actually it was Moses Malone, but if you want to get technical, it was Reggie Harding.
Reggie was drafted first, but not allowed to play in the NBA, so he spent a year in a quasi-developmental league..
Bill Willoughby and Dawkins were next.

I had to look it all up on wikipedia. They were all drafted out of HS and skipped college.
.
I never even heard of Reggie Harding. It says that he did play in the NBA for the Pistons and the Bulls and then in the ABA for the Pacers.  (Active, 1963-1968) Malone was drafted in 1974 but chose to PLAY in the ABA. (Wikipedia doesn't say, but I assume he was drafted by somebody in the NBA? True?)  Dawkins was drafted in 1975 and played with the NBA Sixers. Willoughby was drafted AFTER Dawkins in the 75 draft and played for several NBA teams. His nickname was Poodle.  That nickname probably held him back.
.
"[Dawkins] nickname, "Chocolate Thunder", was bestowed upon him by Stevie Wonder."
