I was wondering what area of the city is the best to stay?

but the hotels are going to be pricier.

The airport hotels are also convenient and often a good bargain on Priceline, but there's very little to see and do out there unless you like watching airplanes take off and land.

The Northend is a great place to visit, but traffic and parking are bad.

Cambridge offers a good compromise, especially the Kendall Square area.

I am wondering if that is more convenient and cost effective, maybe I can take the metro downtown?

Would it be a long ride?

My friend my be lending me a car, so I can drive around easily.

Yeah, the subway (called 'the T' here) runs between the airport and Copley (if that is where you end up staying.)

You'll want to grab a shuttle to the Blue Line. Take the Blue to Government Center, then switch to the Green Line.  There are a bunch of Green Line options - just avoid the ones that say Lechmere or North Station, as those are going in the opposite direction that you want.  Grab a Green Line train that is labeled any of these:
B-Boston College
C-Cleveland Circle
D-Riverside,
E-Heath Street

Any of those will take you to Copley.

....Washington has the perfect set up with the Metro at National Airport....

Boston is not set up as well.....but it is functional, most of the time.
